HomeWorks Launches First Full-Year Program with COVID-19 Protocols
Meet the 2020 HomeWorks scholars!
Dear HomeWorks Community,

We hope your start of the school year has been going well!

This year, HomeWorks looks different. Rather than running our usual residential program, we are running a socially-distanced day program where our scholars come to our HomeWorks space to attend their Trenton Public School classes virtually and then engage in our hallmark HomeWorks programming (featured below!). Since early September, we have been running our program from Mondays to Fridays from 8am to 5pm, transporting our scholars to and from their homes.

Our team spent a long time researching the best way to make this program the safest it could be. The decision to run a day, in-person program reflects our organization’s priority on community health and safety as well as scholars’ social-emotional well-being. It is imperative that, as a community-based nonprofit, HomeWorks continues to provide academic enrichment, social-emotional programming, and an empowering community space for Black and Brown girls throughout the pandemic and beyond.

Please read below to learn more about what our scholars are up to this year!

Thank you and stay safe,
Natalie Tung, Co-Founder and Executive Director of HomeWorks Trenton

Dr. Marci: Cultural Life Skills

Each week, Dr. Marci works with the scholars on cultural life skills. These weekly sessions explore topics such as: race and gender, bullying, body image, stereotypes, and social media. They engage in critical discussions about these issues and explore nuanced ways of understanding as young women of color. Dr. Marci is an urban education Professor at Towson University, and also serves as a member of the HomeWorks Trenton Board of Directors.

Womanspace/Ms. Danielle: Safe Dates

Safe Dates is a ten session curriculum that deals with attitudes and behaviors associated with dating violence. Utilizing activities, role play and discussion, Safe Dates encourages the students to find solutions if they encounter dating violence between friends or their own relationships. This curriculum requires the students to participate and critically think through each scenario, promoting positive communication and healthy relationships.

Polygence:
Individual Research Projects

Polygence is a Stanford- and MIT-founded online research academy. In our collaboration with HomeWorks, we will pair scholars with expert mentors to pursue tailor-made research projects. Under the guidance of their mentors, HomeWorks scholars will engage in academic fields across the humanities, fine arts and STEM. Throughout the process, they learn to be in the driver’s seat of their own education.

Ms. Helen: Wellness and Nutrition

Every other week the students will learn  strategies for better health and fitness. Exercise classes incorporating aerobic, strength and flexibility training provide the foundation for strong and healthy bodies. Yoga class with an asana (poses) and meditation component help achieve both strength and peace. Nutrition tips are included to lead to a sensible and healthy relationship with food. I am excited and honored to share my knowledge with Homeworks students!

Grounds for Sculpture: Art Boxes

Our goals this fall are to develop the students' artistic voice and creative problem skills solving through the exploration of unique GFS ArtBoxes. These hands-on, art making kits will have different themes each month including Sculpture & Healing and Drawing & Storytelling, and encourage written reflections, asking questions and shared conversations. Students will visit Grounds For Sculpture with their own family.

Ms. Youtee: 'For Colored Girls' Curriculum

“For HomeWorks Scholars Finding Their Place in a World That Shuts Them Out” seeks to use Ntzoke Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf as a guide to not only highlight how vulnerable Black and Latinx girls are to the mental, physical, and emotional wear-and-tear of racism and discimination, but name and call out the various ways Black and Latinx girls center and make space for themselves in spite of racial and gender injustice.

Math Curriculum

This year, HomeWorks scholars will be using ALEKS, an online math learning platform, and a curriculum created by Jason Park and Alana Allen, to enrich their high school level math skills. Our HomeWorks tutors will work with scholars to learn new math skills, play mental math games, and review math concepts learned in scholars' virtual classes.

English Curriculum

HomeWorks scholars are engaging in a curriculum called "Actualizing Queens and Women Warriors." Created by Caroline Lee, this English curriculum centers and honors the scholars’ voices and experiences through the power of critical pedagogy and the transformative power of language. This curriculum, designed specifically for our scholars, hopes to empower the scholars to author their own stories and actualize themselves as leaders and agents of positive change.

Road to College Program (College Prep)

Tran Kim-Senior, an admissions professional and diversity practitioner, will be facilitating the Road to College Program to help Homework Scholars better understand the college admissions process and equip them with the confidence and tools they need to navigate it successfully.
