October 2020

We just completed a virtual wine tasting with our friends from Kermit Lynch Importers, purveyors of some of the finest wines from France and Italy. The tasting was a big hit and we were able to get our hands on some hard to find wines from KL. In the month of October we will be featuring various wines from Kermit Lynch. Look for these wines on our shelves and our online store throughout the month of October!

Blinders Event With SommTV and Brandon Wise
On Sale October 1st

The Wine Spot is partnering with the creators of the SOMM films and SommTV for a special virtual event featuring SommTV's new wine tasting game, Blinders! The objective of Blinders is to correctly match your cards to the wine that you think you're blind tasting. Using the cards found in the Blinders deck, be the first to guess the wine correctly to win the round! We will also be joined by local artist Brandon Wise, whose art is featured in the Blinders deck as well as the SommTV films.

For this game, we will be using the Original Blinders deck, which features tasting notes for both red and white wine. The game can be played by yourself or with another person, and will be played virtually with the other attendees. For a flat rate of $65, you will receive the Original Blinders deck as well as two blindly packaged bottles of wine, one red and one white. Starting October 1st you can purchase this package at The Wine Spot. It will also be available in our online store!

Once you have the deck and the wines in hand it is free to attend the event, just RSVP on eventbrite!

Le Fraghe Bardolino
80% Corvina, 20% Rondinella
Veneto, Italy

From the northern part of Italy near Lake Garda in the Veneto.  Bardolino is the lighter and fresher cousin to the more common Valpolicella. Made from the same grapes (Corvina and Rondinella) used to create the powerful and long lived king red of the region, Amarone. Bardolino is a lighter, refreshing wine perfect for summer and fall. I love this wine! As I taste more, I prefer my reds lighter and more refreshing and to me this is the perfect wine. It has fresh light red fruit, a brightness that your tongue will flip over and just enough acidity to make it perfect with food, just about any food!. Serve slightly chilled and enjoy by the fire. Buy two bottles, it’s under $20!

Cirelli Wines Of Anarchy
100% Trebbiano
Abruzzo, Italy

“What is an anarchist? One who, choosing, accepts the responsibility of choice.”
― Ursula K. Le Guin (Author)

Its Wednesday afternoon and I'm getting ready to head home after a short day at The Wine Spot and of course I had to choose a bottle to enjoy that evening. Earlier in the day I listened to an NPR segment where the guest used the word "anarchy"  multiple times in a short period of time. So I decided to use that as inspiration and chose the Agricola Cirelli "Wines of Anarchy" Sparkling Trebbiano. It had been a year since I tried this wine and it was just as fun and refreshing as I remembered. This Trebbiano made in a frizzante style is definitely the kind of wine I tend to describe as  "happy juice".  Bone dry, with frothy bubbles, beautiful minerality and a "sweet tart" finish.

This wine may or may not speak to you. Try it anyways, what have you got to lose?

Schramm's Mead
Red Agnes

Red Current Melomel
14% ABV

Mead, the oft-misunderstood, so-called nectar of the Gods. The drink of warriors and monks, of peasants and emperors, it is the world’s oldest fermented beverage. Mead runs the gamut of cultures from China to Finland to Ethiopia. At its most elementary mead is honey mixed with water and fermented with yeast and that is the basis for mead across the globe. Beyond this simple equation, however, endless variations abound by adding fruit or spices, fermenting sweet or dry, carbonating or leaving still; these are just some of the possibilities. Let’s simplify it with this week’s pick. Schramm’s Red Agnes is a fruit mead (melomel) with red currants. It’s higher in alcohol, sweet, but not without balance, and a beverage of incredible depth. Sip this at room temperature or lightly chilled, preferably by a fire. Or, perhaps, with a Viking war helmet, it’s your choice.

Château De Jarnioux
100% Gamay
Beaujolais, France

Here's my totally predictable pick of the week.... another light-bodied red. I'm working hard at studying for my WSET exam, so not only have I been drinking a ton of wine at home (can't wait to have a beer again) but I've been trying to pay close attention to how wine pairs with food. I made barbecue chicken the other night and opened this bottle. I expected the spice in the food to add a ton of heat to the wine, but it was actually an amazing pairing! I of course tried the wine first on its own, and it was definitely very good though I was mostly just getting a lot of fruit. Once I tried it along with the food, I got a lot of other baking spice notes and the acidity balanced everything out perfectly. I suppose there is a reason everyone wants Beaujolais on Thanksgiving...

Steven's Point Brewing
Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale

Pumpkin/Yam Beer
7% ABV

I just tried this the other weekend and I was blow away. It was pumpkin pie in a beer bottle. But it wasn’t overly sweet. I normally don’t go for anything too pumpkin (I’m an apple pie girl) but I felt
like I could drink a couple of these without feeling too overwhelmed by sugar and spice. I highly recommend for those cooler fall days.
Grab Em quick because they might be gone soon! - Claire
