Done correctly Donor/ Supporter Surveys can be your best tool to generate leads for many of your programs from bequests, regular giving, matching gift potential, and even transformational gifts.
Over the last year, I have seen and been asked to review more donor surveys than ever before. Many still focus on questions for which you should know the answers
i.e. How often do you donate to XYZ?
Believe it or not, there are still some that are Census style and ask questions that are inappropriate and do not provide any real value including, salary, vehicles etc.
Many are still fixated on getting an appraisal as to how well you are doing as an organisation!.... remember it's all about the donor!
To get the best results ask questions that you will “actually do something” with the response. Ask donors about them and what they want!
On a qualitative basis, this can include lead generation;
Bequests – Confirmed (Re-confirmed), Considering, want to talk, would like to attend event, more information
Regular Giving – want to donate this way, would consider, would like more information
Mid- Level – Would like to join a group, attend an event, more information
Major / Transformational Gift – Motivation for Supporting, Specific areas of interest, Connection to leadership, would like to talk to someone, more information, consider
Events – Specific response to which of your events they would like to attend
Raffles/ Lotteries - Self identify their interest as buyers
Hobbies and Interests - Align your activities special events with theirs; Music / Golf / Arts / Travelling
On a quantitative basis, you can learn;
Area of Services / Program which is most supported and can direct your future themes for appeals
Digital and Social Media - which platforms you should focus on and requesting people to join, connect
Stewardship – Are you thanking properly, additional information required
Contact information – completing donor profiles on mass to allow you to tailor and apply multimedia layers to your appeals and communications
Surveys can be done for your entire database to build greater information or they can be tailored specifically to groups i.e.- Bequests / Gift in Wills- Mid-level / Major Donors
