The (Pluff Mud) Show Must Go On: Better Than Ever at the BYSC

It goes without saying that it's challenging to organize a regatta during a pandemic. So a virtual high five to Chris Duer and his team — including family, volunteers, and BYSC staff — for putting together the Pluff Mud Invitational Sept. 12 and 13.

"With almost every regatta in SAYRA canceled this year, we were searching for ways to get some juniors on the water safely and healthily. With a few months of research and plenty of conversation with sailors at other clubs who attempted to hold events, we came up with a way to make it happen … and happen it did!" he said.

The event attracted a record 74 competitors and secured it a place for the second consecutive year as the largest juniors event in the entire SAYRA district.

Because of Covid-19 concerns, the 2020 event was by invitation only. "We invited eight clubs from the region to sail in both the Optimist and Laser (Radial & 4.7) classes," Chris continued.

Chris was effusive about the BYSC and BCSB volunteers and staff for creating "an incredible event amid a pandemic!"

And now let's return the favor. Thank you, Chris, for spearheading an amazing event. Read more ...

Sailboat at dusk

Has all this sailing talk whet your appetite for sun, sails, and sunsets? OK, that was the idea. Because we still have a few open slots in our upcoming two-day Adult Learn to Sail program.

BYSC Members are invited to participate in the sailing course with BCSB Board Member Gordon Sproul and BYSC/BCSB Activities Director Danielle Feerst. They will be using the sunfish fleet owned by the yacht club to learn to sail. The class will run at the BYSC from 1 pm to 4 pm on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Saturday, Oct. 10. SIGN UP NOW!

If you're like most BYSC members, you probably feel a little lost and disconnected, hankering for a return to the fun social activities we all know and love.

Well, relax! You can jump back into some exciting, collaborative work with friends and familiar strangers very soon. That's because it's time for our fall cleanup and maintenance.

Don't roll your eyes. Volunteering is at the heart of this club. And while it's not as intimate as sharing trail mix around the crowded back bar over multiple Yuenglings,  it's meaningful and gets you out of the house.

Read more about the Fall Maintenance Plan Progress. And please ... call one of the crew leaders and volunteer to help.

As we look at the week ahead, we still have an active calendar. Let's close this newsletter with get well wishes to Activities Director Danielle Feerst, who is recovering from a medical emergency. She said she's feeling better and should be back 100% next week.
