What's New at Onboard Maritime

2020 Crew Connect Europe Conference

The 2020 Crew Connect Europe Conference was held virtually and we were delighted to take part in a panel discussion about whether the pandemic in the past few months has brought about any positive changes with regards to the way training is delivered and assessed.

We have seen a number of positive effects as a result in a shift of working away from physical spaces and face-to-face meetings including:
  • The widening of access to courses for people based overseas, in remote communities or working onboard ships.
  • A more innovative approach to assessment of candidates. Both through online oral examinations and the increased use of portfolio work instead of written exams as a way of measuring the competence of a candidate.

The conference was dominated by the effects of COVID-19 on the industry and in particular the cruise ship market, with many industry experts predicting that conditions won’t change substantially until the end of 2021 at the earliest. In terms of training, a number of delegates mentioned the learning opportunity that any quarantine period presented before a seafarer joined their ship.

Royal Yacht Association (RYA) - ‘You & Sea’

This month also saw us team up with Helensburgh based RYA Training Centre ‘You & Sea’ to begin delivery of both the practical and theoretical parts of the MCA Master 200 qualification.

This qualification is essentially the first step for a candidate who wants to progress from the RYA training pathway to the MCA certification structure.

A candidate is required to pass both the theoretical and practical examination elements of the RYA Yachtmaster syllabus before undertaking an MCA Oral exam. With this link-up a candidate can take the practical element at the ‘You & Sea’ training centre and choose whether to take the theoretical element online or classroom based through Onboard Martime.

Celebrating passes

We’re also pleased to be celebrating with Colin who passed his Chief Mate Unlimited exam this month.

Colin said:
"Many thanks to Angus and his team at Onboard Maritime. This is a fantastic way to prepare for the exam, all the learning materials are fresh and slick. The one to one sessions which are offered get you up to speed very quickly.”

Leading People at Sea – The Fundamentals Haven’t Changed

Effective leadership is vital for the smooth operation of vessels; ensuring that your team is encouraged to perform to the best of their abilities whilst maintaining their health, safety and wellbeing. Your approach to leadership will underpin the implementation of the ship Safety Management System and have a direct impact on the motivation of the officers and crew.

Industry News

The UK P&I have uploaded two videos from an excellent seminar which took place at the end of August. The seminar looked at the case of the CMA CGM Libra which was found to be in an unseaworthy condition because the 2nd Officer hadn’t highlighted the T&P notices on the chart. It raises a number of excellent points as to what we mean by the term seaworthy as well as aspects of ECDIS good practice. You can view the videos by following the link here.

Recent ‘M’ Notices

Two MGN’s published recently are worth noting:

MGN 632
The Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Pollution by Garbage from Ships) Regulations 2020
  • The implementation of MARPol Annex V with reference to operations in the Polar regions.

MGN 638
HUMAN ELEMENT GUIDANCE - PART 3 Distraction - the fatal dangers of mobile phones and other personal devices when working
  • Good practice for the use of mobile phones and other portable devices on board ship
