Paris, September 24th
Inspired by Nietzsche’s “The Birth of Tragedy,” the first-time ever worldwide livestream of one of Cai Guo-Qiang’s daytime explosion events will bloom, accompanied by the artist’s narration, over the river Charente in Cognac, France on September 25th (tomorrow) at 3 PM CET / 9 AM EST.
The artist and his teams from China and France have been working onsite for over a week amid changeable weather conditions with scattered rain showers.

The 15-minute, three-act fireworks event unfolds as if on a scroll of calligraphy, a piece of poetic writing, and an act of drama, manifesting the human spirit that, while acknowledging pain, nonetheless embraces and rejoices in life, in harmony with nature. The explosion event honors the universal values of resilience, courage, and hope, and demonstrate mankind’s heroic faith in life and power after a strenuous feat.
While the pandemic continues, the world is shrouded in pessimism and uncertainty. The artist hopes that a sense of ridicule toward human nature evoked by the display will inspire the audience to find liberation, healing, and rebirth...

The Birth of Tragedy was commissioned as part of “A World Odyssey,” which marks Hennessy X.O’s 150th anniversary. Cai’s daytime fireworks use exclusively non-toxic, eco-conscious, CE-certified pyrotechnic products.
