The Baldy Center Magazine

FROM THE DIRECTOR

The past several months have been challenging for all of us. While social distancing and travel restrictions have interrupted our normal programming of in-person talks, workshops, and conferences for the foreseeable future, our community of scholars still are actively engaged in research and writing. In addition, the Baldy Center is bringing law and social policy scholarship online. We are pleased to announce three new online initiatives: the Baldy Center Podcast, Blog, and Magazine. All three feature interdisciplinary perspectives on research and current events from University at Buffalo scholars whose work intersects with law, legal institutions, and social policy.

In this, the inaugural issue of our magazine, we feature the work of Filomena Critelli (Social Work), who focuses on sexual harassment legislation and the #MeToo Movement in Pakistan and the effects of domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic; Marion Werner (Geography), who along with her colleagues analyzes the regulation of pervasive agrichemicals in the global context; Matthew Dimick (Law) and his upcoming conference on Marx and the administrative state and the impact of the pandemic on economic well-being; and Kim Diana Connolly (Law), who reflects on completion of the 2019 Ramsar Designation of the Niagara River Corridor and talks about next steps in achieving a transboundary designation with Canada during a pandemic and challenging economic times.

We highlight recent research by Sharmistha Bagchi-Sen (Geography) who focuses on “shrinking cities” and the importance of fine-grained demographic studies in developing policy; Rebecca Redwood French (Law) and her long-term commitment to multicultural approaches to law; and former fellow Jennifer Hunt (Univ. of Kentucky) shares how her research on juror decision making has changed shape since her participation in the Baldy Buffaronto conference in 2017, and the inevitable methodological shifts that have occurred since the COVID-19 pandemic. Read on to hear from our current research fellows and Daniel Platt, a recent postdoctoral fellow who is now an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

We hope you will enjoy learning about the exciting, cutting-edge research being conducted by Baldy-affiliated scholars, including new research on law and social policy issues raised by the pandemic. For updates and news, you can connect with us on social media; we are @baldycenter on Twitter. We look forward to staying in touch and hope to be able to welcome you back to in-person events at the Baldy Center soon.

Warmly,
Samantha Barbas, Director

Voices and Words

The Baldy Center Blog and the Baldy Center Podcast share exciting new law and social policy research, and expert perspectives on current events from UB faculty. Our community of scholars is actively engaged in research and writing even if social distancing and travel restrictions have interrupted our normal dynamic of in-person talks, workshops, and conferences for the foreseeable future. All are welcome to read, listen, and comment.
BALDY CENTER PODCAST
The Baldy Center podcast highlights University at Buffalo faculty research and perspectives on current events. Episodes this season include conversations about contact tracing, medical posthumanities, counterterrorism, and prison labor unions.

FROM THE BALDY CENTER FELLOWS

From the Fellows: Issues and developments in law and social policy

Baldy Center Research Fellows are scholars working on law, legal institutions, and social policy at the University at Buffalo and in our regional, national, and global sociolegal community. Our fellows answer two questions about law and social policy research under current conditions..

Reflecting on Two Years at the Baldy Center

Baldy Center Postdoctoral Fellows are highly promising scholars from a variety of disciplines who have completed their PhDs and/or JDs at other universities, but have not yet commenced tenure track positions. Chosen in an extremely competitive process, they carry out their scholarly projects with the full array of UB research resources and participate in Baldy Center talks, discussions, workshops, and conferences. Daniel Platt recently completed a two-year Baldy Center postdoctoral position.

INSIGHT

The problem is clearly multifaceted: police brutality and juror decision making

Jennifer Hunt was a Baldy Center Research Fellow until 2018. Hunt now is a faculty member at the University of Kentucky, where she continues her research on juror decision-making about police killings of community members of color.
