Confession: I am a capitalization constable.

Note I’m not using the word “cop” but instead the less violent British position of constable. (Did you know that American cops kill the same number of people with guns in one day that British officers do in a year? I wrote this on the day that a Kentucky grand jury failed to indict cops for killing Breonna Taylor.)

I am ever on the lookout for excess, unnecessary capitalization. It comes from all those years working with engineers and scientists, who seem to believe that words become more important if they are capitalized.

In this article I list four times I would give you a very polite English ticket (with a cuppa!) if you use initial caps instead of lowercase letters.

If Dolly Parton & Flight of the Conchords got drunk and had a baby, you'd get the hilariously irreverent NYC-based musical comedy duo Reformed Whores! When they're not sharing their "magnificently bawdy celebration of female sexuality” (Broadway Baby) and empowering women, normalizing the female experience, and busting a few guts, they are cohosting the Difficult Women podcast. The podcast is a fantastic combination of current affairs, feminism, social justice, and funny, irreverent conversation—plus a lovely blend of women’s friendship. Read more about Katy and Marie here. You won't want to miss this one, but it does contain adult content.

Next week I interview Farheen Raza (below), host of Authentic + Unfiltered with Farheen, previously known as Musings of a Modern Muslim. Farheen is a Muslim-American community activist, radio personality, and mom of three boys from Flower Mound, Texas. She describes herself as a fearless communicator, very loud on social media and active on multiple fronts. We talked about being a Muslim in America, her bout with COVID-19, podcasting, and the hotly debated movie “Cuties.”
