A Special Prayer For Our Ordinands

A special prayer for all our ordinands this year and all those who have been called to ordained ministry in the years before...

Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer God
who you call your faithful people into a life of service,
help us to nurture and hold in love
all those who are ordained at this time in the life of your Church.
Teach us your ways,
that we might recognise your Mission in the world,
your compassion in caring for others,
and your love deep within every human heart.
We ask this in your Holy Name,
as one undivided Trinity of love,
now and for evermore.  Amen

COVID Latest Guidance

The Church of England has issued a number of new/updated FAQs and guidance documents in light of the Government's announcements of further restrictions to try to prevent a second COVID-19 wave.

These can be accessed on the Church of England’s coronavirus page:

New FAQs:

  • What guidance is there for Fresh Expressions? under Prayer and worship section.
  • How can parishes plan ahead? under General section and which offers guidance on how to prepare or update your continuity plan in preparedness for further possible developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular local outbreaks or a ‘second wave.
  • If a life cycle event does not traditionally happen during communal worship does that mean it is limited to 6 people attending? Under Life Events
Updated FAQs:
  • Can baptisms still go ahead? under the Life Events section
  • Can ordinations still go ahead? under the Life Events section
  • Advice on NHS Test & Trace under the General section
New Documents: Updated documents:
Test and Trace

Bishop James has written to all clergy this week asking that they display Test and Trace QR code posters outside the entrances of churches.

Though this is not an obligation for most churches, Bishop James asks that the posters be put up in support of the Test and Trace system. For churches and cathedrals which are tourist attractions, the Heritage sector guidance makes this compulsory. Church halls must also legally display the QR code posters.

Churches can generate a poster with a unique QR code for their building by visiting this website: https://www.gov.uk/create-coronavirus-qr-poster.

Of course, the QR code posters are meant to supplement what is already taking place with regard to the collection of data. If people can’t scan the QR code, their details can still be collected using pen and paper, as before.

PCC Meetings - Guidance

A reminder that PCCs can currently meet physically or virtually, though the Government continues to recommend that where meetings can take place digitally without the need for face-to-face contact, they should continue to do so.

For in-person meetings in a church or a church hall, the guidance for the safe opening of these buildings must be followed and good physical distancing and hygiene measures employed.

In terms of physical meetings, and following the introduction of the ‘rule of 6’, we would also refer you to the Government’s Guidance Coronavirus outbreak FAQs: what you can and can't do.

Clause 2.10 of the document states, “There are exceptions where groups can be larger than 6 people, including: for work, or the provision of voluntary or charitable services”, thus allowing PCCs to continue to meet in person should they choose to do so.

PCC meetings can also take place virtually, using such platforms as Skype or Zoom. For more information and guidance visit the Church of England's coronavirus webpage and click on How can my PCC hold a remote meeting? under the Finance and Governance section.

Wherever possible it is recommended that virtual meetings continue to take place.
Offering Hope As We Face A Second Wave

The Church has a vital role to play in offering hope and comfort to the nation as we face an expected second wave of the coronavirus, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have said.

In a joint letter to the bishops of the Church of England, Archbishops Justin Welby and Stephen Cottrell set out a stark assessment of the challenges facing the country amid the pandemic including hunger, homelessness, mental health pressures and domestic violence.

But, they say, the Church of England, through its presence in every community, can play a vital role in serving the nation - especially those most in need - and in bringing hope to all through the gospel.

National Churches Trust Experiences

The National Churches Trust has developed a new initiative "Experiences by Explore Churches", to help churches create new ways to encourage visitors to their buildings. Today's tourists and visitors want something really special and the UK's churches, full of heritage and stories, are packed with Experiences.

As part of this initiative, they're holding a free workshop, delivered on Zoom, on 15 October at 10.30am. The session will teach you all about developing a unique Experience for your church, from coming up with an idea to identifying your audience and much more.

Cinnamon Network Training Events

The Cinnamon Network has developed a series of training events. These are for Christian leaders and volunteers who are passionate about seeing God's love transform their communities.

The training will be held online and is free. Sessions are interactive, with topics including;

  • Effective Leadership
  • Build a Successful Fundraising Strategy
  • Empowering Volunteers

APCM - FAQs and Polling Support

A reminder that all Annual Parochial Church Meetings must be completed by 31 October.

A new bishop's direction has been created which means APCMs can now be held virtually on Zoom or another such platform. This also covers Deanery Synods.

Two further documents have been prepared to help those who may have questions. An APCM FAQs document considers issues such as:
  • holding a hybrid meeting, some attending virtually and some physically
  • enabling 'phone in' to Zoom meetings
  • identifying those present at meetings
  • revisions of and publication of electoral roll
Meanwhile a further document provides support on how to vote electronically on the Zoom platform by using the polling facility.
