Welcome ACLP Family,

This month we are so excited to welcome you to the Future Scholars Program! Our first session was a hit and we are so moved by the stories each of you told!  Our students this semester so far include musicians, polyglots (someone who speaks a variety of languages), and dreamers! If you are interested in joining the Future Scholars Program, which is a program geared towards providing black students with Penn mentors to guide them through the college process and paired with a culturally-enriched program that provides students with hard and soft skills, send in your names through our website! We are looking to empower kind, intelligent and ambitious students like you, and we know you would be a good fit! The ACLP  team has also grown to include our new tutors: Sakina Adamali and Stacey Boakey; And our new team of volunteers: India Allen, Yina Anyachebelu, Ami Ikuenobe and Bereket Gebregziabher! Our team is so excited to meet you all and after our first session we know this will be a great year! If you have any questions or are interested in joining us this semester, send us an email at info@weareaclp.org

Warmly,

Marissa Kesse

Program Director

This October is filled with opportunities for your student to grow with us. We’re excited that we successfully launched our Future Scholars Program (FSP) on Tuesday, October 6th. Throughout October, FSP will cover a variety of topics that involve both hard and soft skills ranging from self-pride, cultural identity to calling for change and time management, which is especially important as for most of us, working from home, there is no longer a distinction between our home and our workplace. Lastly, students will be giving a virtual tour of American University to end the month with all treats and no tricks... well, unless you count your new time management tricks.

Outside of FSP, this month offers great opportunities to have hard conversations with your student since October is Global Diversity Awareness MonthNational Bullying Prevention Month, and Emotional Health Wellness Month. These monthly spotlights make it easy to start a wide range of conversations like celebrating the diverse cultures and backgrounds that our multicultural society has, acknowledging the need to respect and include other students to prevent bullying, or recalling the importance of checking in with yourself, try to find productive outlets for your stress and, above all, understand that it is normal to not be okay sometimes.

It's October. School has started. You're slowly becoming a Google Classroom pro. Now, clubs and after-school activities are constantly flooding your email or Facebook feed. You're finally settling in, and you find yourself wondering which clubs are best to join. Are you excited to see that little red circle next to your email grow by the hour? If you’re thinking of joining a lot of clubs, understanding the benefits and drawbacks of that decision will help you make the best choice for you. Still, there is no rule for how many clubs are “too many.” In general, try to think of clubs as adding to your high school experience.

You did it! Congratulations! All your hard work and dedication paid off, and you are getting ready to embark on a whole new chapter of your life. So exciting! While I am confident you will make so many important memories, grow academically and professionally, and have so much fun, there may be times that you struggle. Times when you are unsure of yourself or what to do next.
