- Earlier this year, HomeFree released specifications for healthier paint and flooring that project teams can incorporate into projects. These editable Word documents include example products that meet their specifications, as well as some contextual information about the “what” and “why” of healthier materials.
- HUD’s Capital Needs Assessment (CNA) e-Tool automates the preparation, submission, and review of a property’s Capital Needs Assessment when applying for Federal Housing Administration (FHA) multifamily financing. Join the Better Buildings Waste Reduction Pilot

Annually, the U.S. generates more than 260 million tons of municipal solid waste. Organizations that reduce waste can save on operating costs associated with waste disposal, energy use, and raw material purchases. In 2019, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced the Better Buildings, Better Plants Waste Reduction Pilot.

Over a 2-year period, DOE is working with interested partners to collectively set, track, and meet waste reduction goals. Participating partners receive a range of benefits including guidance and technical support on waste data tracking and waste management best practices, networking with peers through webinars, conferences and other events, and earning recognition for their progress in waste reduction.
BBC Multifamily Sector partner and Goal Achiever Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) joined the Waste Pilot in February 2020 with a goal to increase its waste diversion rate to 60 percent by 2028. As a multifamily owner in San Francisco, TNDC has a regulatory obligation to maintain recyling and composting infrastructure. The organization has a three-pronged approach to waste management: infrastructure, data tracking and monitoring, and resident engagement. TNDC shared its approach to waste management during the Pilot’s first quarterly call. Watch a recording of the Waste Reduction Pilot presentation.

Jonathan Rose Companies (JRCo) won the Portfolio of the Year Award in the LA Better Buildings Challenge’s 2020 Innovation Awards. The award recognizes the property owner who has made the greatest impact year over year, implementing energy and water upgrades at scale across their Los Angeles portfolio. The award recognized JRCo’s rehabilitation of two LA properties: Casa Panorama and Miramar Towers.

Both properties feature electrification of the domestic hot water (DHW) systems by switching gas-fired boilers to high-efficiency heat pump water heaters. Casa Panorama included DHW recirculation pump controls and thermostatically controlled balancing valves to optimize energy and water use as well as new high efficiency heating boilers and controls to reduce unneeded use of cooling towers and boilers. Miramar Towers will include installation of rooftop solar PV.
This summer, the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana authorized the Housing Authority of the City of Fort Wayne to request the release of Energy Performance Contract (EPC) funds from HUD. The $1.8 million Fort Wayne Housing EPC project will consist of efforts to reduce energy consumption at six multifamily properties in Fort Wayne. The EPC will cover the replacement of existing lighting at each property with new LED lighting, fixtures, and other technology. The project will also include the installation of ENERGY STAR-rated washers and heat pump units, common area occupancy-based thermostats, and new domestic hot water tankless heaters at select properties.
