LISTENER OF THE WEEK: ERIK DIDRIKSEN

Be kind, and cook like an Italian!

I live in … Astoria NY.

I work as … a software engineer.

I discovered “Rockin’ the Suburbs” after … Jim and Patrick interviewed me about my book Pop Sonnets on their old show, and I've been listening to them ever since.

A few of my lesser-known favorite artists are … Hurry, Cabana Wear, Beeef, the Courtneys, the Not Fur Longs, Wild Flowers of America, Veronica Falls and the Pooches.

My record collection consists of … just under 500 LPs; who knows how many CDs and digital-only albums.

The most-prized record in my collection is … a test pressing of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's Fly By Wire, which is one of my desert island LPs.

The last records I bought were … during a visit to Limited to One on 10th Street last weekend. I picked up Eyelids' Or, the Ting Tings' We Started Nothing and a test pressing of the American Analog Set's Updates EP. I'd been looking for Updates on vinyl for years, so it was a thrill to find.

The first concert I saw was … the Allman Brothers Band with Susan Tedeschi in August 2001 at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel NJ.

The last concert I saw was … Habibi's record release show for Anywhere But Here at Market Hotel in Brooklyn this past February.

The best concerts I’ve seen were … The Who in August 2002, Rancid in September 2015, Beach Slang in November 2017, the Hives in May 2019 and Misfits in October 2019. I guess I like it loud.

My favorite song lyrics are … ones you can understand in contradictory ways, like Vampire Weekend's "Campus." Is the chorus "How am I supposed to pretend? I never want to see you again", or is it "How am I supposed to pretend I never want to see you again?" I'm really enamored with the Lemonheads' "Being Around" and Cabana Wear's "Summer" for similar reasons.

I play … guitar, bass, and trumpet. I took four semesters of piano instruction in college, but I still can't play worth a damn.

I am drinking … Brooklyn Lager and Noah's Mill bourbon. I've been trying to patronize local breweries & bottle shops in these troubled times, too; recent favorites include Fifth Hammer's Saturation Boost, Big aLICe's Lemongrass Kölsch, and Japas' Oishii.

My favorite EPL team is … Please -- I'm an American. Go Yankees!

My philosophy of life is … Be kind, and cook like an Italian.

Friday New Releases: Gimme New Albums

Friday means fresh piles of new wax! Get your turntable and Discwasher ready for a few of these tasty platters!

Blitzen Trapper - Holy Smokes Future Jokes (Yep Roc)
The songs on this album explore the concept of the Bardo, the state between death and rebirth. Kind of like the state the podcast will be in this weekend (ha - Jim must have written this.)

Deftones - Ohms (Reprise)
On their ninth album, these Sacramento hard rockers deal with matters of aging. It’s a sad time when you realize you can no longer rock ’n’ roll all night and party every day (hey - did Patrick write this one?)

Demolition Means Progress - Undefined Horizon (DMP)
Last week, we gave you a first listen of this EP by a super cool Minnesota band. They can explain it better than we can.

Fleet Foxes - Shore (Anti-/Epitaph)
New Blitzen Trapper and Fleet Foxes in the same week? Enjoy this bounty of intelligent indie folk from the Pacific Northwest.

Idles - Ultra Mono (Partisan)
This British band is in-your-face post-punk rage. Put it on, turn it up, shout along and you’ll feel a little better about 2020.

Lydia Loveless - Daughter (Honey, You’re Gonna Be Late)
In the four years since her last album, Loveless has gone through a marital divorce, a messy record label divorce and a change in home base. So it’s no wonder that the tumultuousness of life is reflected on these 10 songs.

Thurston Moore - By the Fire (Daydream Library)
Did anyone else know that Moore has released seven solo albums? Drop the needle on this one and you instantly are transported to a time, some 30 years ago, when Sonic Youth were about the coolest band going. Dissonance = beauty.

Bob Mould - Blue Hearts (Merge)
About 18 months after Sunshine Rock, Bob Mould is angry again. And we couldn’t be happier.

My Kid Brother - My Kid Brother (Fearless)
Now called My Kid Brother, this band (formerly Kid Brother) is a Suburbs Pod favorite. About a year ago, they performed in a back yard in Northern Virginia and we recorded it and talked with them, and so now they have a record deal and that’s really cool and, are we gushing?

Public Enemy - What you Gonna do When the Grid Goes Down? (Def Jam)
For their 15th (!) album, PE is back on Def Jam. And they are angry and focused and revitalized and all is right in the world. Well, not the world, but this little part of it

Sylvan Esso - Free Love (Loma Vista/Concord)
You know how with a lot of modern bands, you can play spot the influences? It’s not quite so easy with Sylvan Esso. This electronic duo has a low-key sound that seems so of its time, like it was dropped from the sky, pristine and untouched. This is their third album, and you should listen to all three.
