The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning welcomes four new faculty
 The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning announces the appointment of four new faculty members whose diverse backgrounds and deep research expertise enhance the school’s strengths and bring to the department fresh ideas and unbounded energy.
“Our new faculty this year both complement our current strengths and bring in new perspectives,” Elizabeth Wentz, interim director in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, and vice provost and dean of the Graduate College, said. “We are seeing growth in earth observing, social justice, and global engagement. These are all important for our research agenda and our curricula.”
The four new faculty build on the school’s strong foundation of tackling significant environmental and societal issues through cultural geography, human-environmental science, spatial analysis and statistical modeling.
“These exciting new hires are very important for the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, as well as ASU,” Kelli Larson, deputy director and professor in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, said. “Ultimately, our future largely depends on such talented scholars with a breadth of expertise and experiences.”

Meet the Sun Devil 100 Class of 2020 honorees from The College
 Each year, the Arizona State University Alumni Association celebrates the achievements of alumni who own or lead successful, fast-growing, innovative businesses across the globe with the Sun Devil 100 awards. This year, 29 graduates from The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences were recognized at the Sun Devil 100 Class of 2020 virtual reception earlier this month.
The Sun Devil 100 Class of 2020 includes 100 organizations led by 127 alumni who are entrepreneurs, business owners, founders or C-suite executives. The group’s companies employ 10,204 people and represent each college at ASU and a total of 155 degrees. Amongst the honorees was Brian Swanton, urban planning alumnus 95' and master of public administration alumnus 03' who serves as president and chief executive officer for Gorman & Company.

ASU Virtual Career and Internship Expo, Sept 29 – Oct 2
ASU’s fall career event will take place virtually this year! This will be a great opportunity for you to meet with employers from many industries, including the Peace Corps, Environmental Defense Fund, EASi, and more. Because the expo will be held virtually, you must register in advance for each session you are interested in, in order to attend the event. Also, take advantage of resources on how to navigate a virtual career event, and consider attending a preparation event to have all of your questions answered!

AGIC Education and Training Symposium Maps & Apps Contest
AGIC, the Arizona Geographic Information Council, is Arizona’s primary organization for GIS professionals. AGIC’s annual meeting will take place Oct 19-23; it will be virtual and there will be no cost to attend. The Maps & Apps Contest is a great opportunity to share your work with professionals & earn recognition! This north Phoenix-based land brokerage has a paid internship opportunity, to begin as soon as a qualified applicant is identified. The intern will learn and assist a mapping professional and work closely with owner of the company in updating and maintaining an ArcGIS database and maps. (Spring 2021) NASA DEVELOP Applied Sciences Program – Locations across US, including ASU Tempe (may be remote)
A great opportunity for current students or recent graduates interested in practical applications of remote sensing and GIS. Projects focus on addressing local and international community concerns while utilizing NASA's Earth observations. Participants will work with NASA scientists and partner organizations to learn about the use of NASA remote sensing imagery for use in water resources, disaster management, ecological forecasting, and other applications to address environmental community concerns. Responsibilities will include: literature review, data processing and analysis composing of deliverables including a technical paper, presentation, and poster. Previous GIS or remote sensing knowledge, while beneficial, is not required for acceptance. Applicants must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment.
