Amazing School Spirit, thanks for sharing
DISTRICT UPDATE | SEPTEMBER 25, 2020
View this email in your browser
The health and safety of students and staff are at the forefront of each decision made in Santa Clara Unified School District. The pandemic has magnified this guiding principle. We believe it is in our students' best interest to provide as much normalcy as possible academically, socially, and emotionally. Therefore, we intend to begin to safely reopen campuses to students for in-person learning as soon as allowed by the state and county public health officials, and to remain open.

The Board of Trustees and district have communicated a commitment to our community that the soonest we would move to Phase Two of our Reopening Plan — hybrid learning instructional model — is at the end of the grading period.

The soonest our students would return to in-person learning is:

  • November for elementary schools
  • January for secondary schools
Phase Two is when students begin to return to campuses in smaller groups (cohorts) for in-person learning. Phase Two also includes a 100% distance learning option for families who want their children to remain home when the district moves into Phase Two.

A staff and family survey will be sent out in early October to help assess our district's readiness to move to Phase Two.

Superintendent's Message
In June, our Board of Trustees approved our 15-year strategic vision, born out of a year-long community-driven process involving more than 1,800 stakeholders from across our district through community input sessions, guiding coalitions, surveys, and more.

Vision Statement

Graduates of Santa Clara Unified School District are resilient, future-ready, lifelong learners who think critically, solve problems collaboratively, and are prepared to thrive in a global society.
Our vision comprises four main areas:
  1. Our Core Values
  2. The Graduate Portrait
  3. The Adult Portrait
  4. The System Portrait
The critical role of every school system is to engage students here and now, while preparing them to thrive in their lives and careers. Our vision gives us focus, especially now as we engage our stakeholders and make plans for the 2020-2021 school year during these uncertain and unique times.

Over the next year and beyond, we will help you learn more about our vision, what it looks like in action, and what you can do to support it.

Students, Families, and Staff Show their School Spirit

We may not be together as we would like, but it didn’t stop us from celebrating our first-ever districtwide Spirit Week this week. Big thanks to everyone who participated, including our partners, the Santa Clara Unified Council of PTAs.

We appreciate everyone who shared their pictures with us using #SCUSDproud and, as you may have seen, we have been posting them on our social media channels over the course of the week. If you missed that, you can also check out the photos on Flickr.

Stories from Across the District

Culinary Arts Students Tantalize Staff's Taste Buds (full article)

The pandemic may be preventing our culinary arts students from cooking together, but it’s not stopping Santa Clara High School (SCHS) students from sharing their work. In an effort to keep staff and students connected, students have been taking photos of food and of their cooking at home and sharing with staff to use as screen savers.

Making Music Together While Apart (full article)

When the Coronavirus pandemic closed schools in March, all of our schools moved to teach through distance learning. Don Callejon’s music classes were no exception to this and music teacher Clifford Rawson was determined to create an innovative way to replace their typical spring concert and promotion ceremony with a new end-of-year musical project.
