Hi y'all,

We know a lot of you are hurting right now. We are too. The lack of justice for Breonna Taylor and the loss of Ruth Bader Ginsburg are part of what prompts us to urge you to figure out your voting plan, ask friends and family about their voting plans (aka talk them out of their apathy), and if you can, sign up to be a pollworker. For now, we have a buffet of links for you, some to go deep, some to take you to cozier places. Pause your doom scrolling and hang out awhile?

With love,
Team CYG

BESTIES OF THE MONTH

Listener Meg Marie Ford wrote to us about her grandmother, Rose Marie Seemann, and best friend, Phyllis Schutterhelm. Friends since childhood (this picture is from their class of '47 yearbook!), they've been able to move into the same assisted living facility during the pandemic.

Meg wrote: "I was talking to my grandma about spending time with Phyllis, and she said 'It's not like back when we were in seventh grade, racing around, but it's nice to have someone to spend time with,' (since no family is allowed to visit her). I don't have any friends I've known that long, but I look forward to being in assisted living with my lady loves someday."

WE'RE OBSESSED
Gina is feeling:
  • Dating White. If you were glued to the interracial friendship chapter of Big Friendship and looking for more conversation on how those dynamics play out in dating and sexual relationships, this show is for you. Friend of the podcast Myisha Battle and Nkechi Njaka share their experiences as women of color dating white men.
  • I *just* started the new Elena Ferrante novel The Lying Life of Adults and as usual, her style of prose and quality of childhood observation is wrapping me up like a warm blanket.

Aminatou recommends:
  • The Couch to 5k running program. I am shocked that I am recommending this but it works! I had tried it in the past and could never get it together enough to time myself but now there are a few dozen phone apps that can coach you through this program. I use a free one on my iPhone and I am out here! Running! If like me you have never run before, it's hard but so rewarding and even...fun!
  • This delicious vegetarian Kofta recipe and the sweet story behind it.
Ann digs:
  • In Our Time. This BBC history podcast doubles as my meditation app. I love hanging out with (and, uh, sometimes falling asleep to) a panel of academics!
  • These zucchini pancakes are better than they have any right to be.
Brijae is loving:
  • The new podcast Shagged, Married, Annoyed.
  • I've been living my fancy woman fantasy with this fountain pen.
  • Pretty late on this show but just started watching Derry Girls and quickly found myself bingeing through season one. It's so funny and such a great time to wind down.
Laura is a fan of:

GLAMOUR SHOTS
You can find all the press for Big Friendship here. A few favs include interviews with The Stacks and Reading Glasses, plus a conversation with Alicia Garza on Lady Don't Take No.
