Our House is a very, very, very fine ...

… cottage. There are occasionally two cats in the yard and life is …. easy because of a certain ‘you’.
Our house
Our home in the Moravian uplands sits in a bucolic valley amid forests and fields redolent of 1950s Surrey: farmyard smells; taciturn men on vast agricultural machinery; children playing free of parental paranoia; a pub selling everything in the enlarged front room of a matronly landlady; an ideal bolthole from London, especially at this time.

Nestled in verdant hills, each village has its vast church with twin spires and/or onion domes. Here are the birthplaces of Smetana and Martinů and the Janáček Festival in the Czech Republic’s turn of the 19th century second city. In 2021, we will invite Kudus to join us in this Central European jewel and walk our hills; drink our wine and enjoy our food.
Our village
This was the base from which Tereza and your humble author set out, not to conquer, but to walk gently through Peru, Uzbekistan, Montenegro, New Mexico – essentially the world - to share birds and flowers and secret sights. We’ve watch operas in 15th century castles in Finland and on a lake in Bregenz. We’ve played with gorillas and trod where ancient civilisations built. We have lived the world, not just visited.

So, this year has brought us literally down to the ground and – whisper it gently – it’s been good. Gardens have been planted; wasteland turned into courtyards; flowers have bloomed and great meals have been eaten, with wines in easy reach. For many, the contentment of their own hearth has always been sufficient; perhaps this year has enabled some to discover or re-discover the happiness of home.

But to return to the source of our title, you have to ask what brought a Canadian, a Texan and boy from Blackpool to join with a native Angeleno in the creation of the finest harmonies and music of West Coast folk rock. (My own theory is Joni Mitchell, but that’s for another day.) Their experiences from small towns; their travels, mental and physical, created iconic escapades in lyrics and sound.

We travel to learn; to enjoy; to graft onto lives, hopefully well lived, additional slivers of experience.

A small band of Kudus has just returned from Poland enthused by the Bieszczady National Park; the delightful hospitality of Michalina and her wonderful father; Krakow without hordes of tourists; and stories of an Elbow-High monarch.

Greece still beckons this October, with Athens stripped of coach tours and the lure of Ruth reading the hyperbolic tales of the ultimate cad, bounder and possible James Bond prototype, Patrick Leigh Fermor.

Next year, the Grenadines, Morocco and Portugal are attracting Kudus and, closer to home, the Orkneys will go, God willing.

So, ‘I’ll light the fire while you place the flowers in the vase you bought today’ and let’s dream of 2021’s journeys, knowing perhaps that this year has made home a better, cosier and happier place whence to launch our imaginations and whither to return our satisfied bodies.

All the best from us to you.
