Sydney International Airport retail ghost town, and blocked access to Qantas lounges
|
|
Hello travellers,
Greetings from 'I'm flying to Adelaide on Monday, and you're not' Sydney.
I'm allowed to fly to Adelaide
As of last Thursday, those in New South Wales are allowed to fly to South Australia without serving 14 days in quarantine. That means I can wend my way on Monday to spend a week catching up with friends and relatives and working on some family business.
Isn't that picture above of the retail space at Sydney International Airport sad? Shops are closed and emptied of goods as if exceptionally well-behaved thieves have marauded through the mall.

The contents of a Qantas Jumbo cart, that you could have bought last week
|
|
What happened last week?
Qantas sold off a 1000 galley carts to B747 souvenir hunters in less than an afternoon and dumped a bunch of its sports, arts, community and indigenous sponsorship - basically anything that involved handing over actual cash. Oh, and it started a new direct Canberra to the Gold Coast route given that Queensland is now letting Canberrans in.
They also got into trouble for JobKeeper abuse, according to a Federal Court ruling.
Rex announced funding for expansion - and that they will develop a frequent flyer scheme and Airbus 'celebrated' the final A380 rolling out of its factory.

Final A380 exits the production hanger in Tolouse.

What's coming up?
I will probably report on the novelty of domestic airline travel on Qantas, given I will be on my first flight for more than 6 months.
We might get a Queensland border open, or even some relaxation of strict COVID-19 related conditions in Victoria, or someone might actually own up to deciding to use private security in hotel quarantine. We live in hope.
You can catch up on posts from last week below. Until next week . . .
Best wishes and 'I'm flying to Adelaide' in case you missed that,
Stephen

The Federal Court did not agree with the Qantas interpretation of how it could use government JobKeeer payments in a case brought by airline unions. This result means that Qantas will more than likely owe backpay to hundreds of employees working during the pandemic. The decision has wider application and may affect a whole lot […]

Yipee! I will be off to Adelaide as soon as I can, to visit family and conclude some business! That is as long as NSW confirms on Wednesday (22 September) that there have been no new cases of community transmission of COVID-19. Arrivals from NSW into South Australia will no longer have to complete 14 […]

Given that Australians on the whole are banned from international flying, I havn’t had much cause to pop-into Sydney’s International Airport, let alone the post passport control retail and lounge areas. I havn’t, but our international guest, post pandemic and residency qualifying stay, who left the country a few days ago, did. And here is […]

We can forget about a ‘trans-Tasman bubble’, quarantine free zone until March 2021 according to a report by the delightful Patrick Hatch from the Sydney Morning Herald, based on observations by Greg Foran, the CEO of Air New Zealand. That’s a bit disappointing, as I was hopeful we might at least be able to travel […]
