Fall 2020 Newsletter

Big changes here at the Center for Healing Neurology- please read on.

Twenty-twenty has been a wild ride of a year. Beyond all of our best efforts to maintain the regular ole foundations of our health, like diet, exercise, and sleep, we've also all been faced with the ongoing COVID pandemic and the ensuing economic instability, climate challenges including forest fires and smoke clouds, fire tornados and double hurricanes, and the social revolution that has laid bare a truer version of our country's history, leading some towards liberation, others through an uncomfortable reckoning and pushing some towards extremist entrenchment.

All of this impacts our neurology. Literally, all of it. This necessitates a partial pivot on our part.

Working with you 1:1 in clinic visits remains one of our greatest joys and we will continue to support you in this manner. But in an effort to learn more to continue our journey with you, Dr Ruhoy will be stepping back from clinical practice as of November 30 without any set return to clinical practice at this time. She will be taking advantage of research opportunities to bring to our clinic practice. Dr. Ruhoy remains our Medical Director and will continue to consult on patients seen by Dr Gillian. More about this below.

We want you to continue to learn about your neurology and are thrilled to announce our new textbook, Integrative Medicineco-edited by Dr Ruhoy with a chapter by Dr. Gillian on Ayurveda in Neurology. And don’t forget our Podcast for Healing Neurology episodes which come out every Wednesday - subscribe to get notifications on these. Stay tuned for much, much more coming your way.

Our mission remains the same which is to support all of us to continue optimizing our health and the health of our world.

In solidarity & health,

Drs Ruhoy & Gillian and the team at Center for Healing Neurology

Changes in CHN Clinical Practice

Q&A about Dr Ruhoy's step-back from clinical practice:
  • When is Dr Ruhoy's last day? November 30th.
  • Is the clinic closing? NO. All of our services remain open and available to you. Dr Gillian continues to see patients and is happy to see you. Dr Ruhoy remains our medical director and typically consults on most patients seen by Dr Gillian.
  • Should I find another neurologist? This is up to you. You are welcome to see Dr Gillian, but if you need or prefer to be seen by a neurologist, consider finding a neurologist (Dr Gillian is not a neurologist).
  • Do you recommend any local or otherwise neurologists? We do not have any specific recommendations to make. Please work with whoever is close, available and a good fit for you.
OF NOTE: Dr Gillian will be opting out of Medicare as of October 1, 2020. Labs, prescriptions and referrals will still be covered as per Medicare guidelines for your particular plan, but the clinical visit portion will be aligned with our standard payment schedule- please call for details.

New Service: Mindfulness with Jeff Granville

Welcome to Jeff Granville, Mindfulness Specialist!
Jeff Granville has an incredible direct experience of the power of mindfulness triggered by his 4-year-old son, Makoy, receiving an acute cancer diagnosis and requiring interventional procedures in a very fragile state. Jeff was able to use mindfulness to guide his son through a PICC line placement and lumbar puncture without sedation or restraints- astounding all of the medical staff in the room!

This has led Jeff down an incredible path including the formation of his non-profit, Mindful Presents (https://www.mindfulpresents.org/) which works to share mindfulness with the medical and parent community nationwide. He is active with the Seattle Children's Hospital community on their parent advisory committee as well as new nurse orientation.

He now is offering mindfulness sessions for adults, children and families at the Center for Healing Neurology. This may be for you if you are experiencing any type of stress in your personal life, family life or for medical issues with you or family members. Of course, his specialty remains pediatrics. These can be accessed in person in our clinic on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays or via video.

You can hear more about Jeff and get to know him through our Podcast for Healing Neurology episode #29 which aired 9/23/20: https://anchor.fm/dashboard/episode/ek2b86

Welcome Jeff!
For uncertain times, here is a brilliant story by Buddhist nun, Pema Chödrön, from her book, The Wisdom of No Escape: How to Love Yourself and Your World

“There is a story of a woman running away from tigers. She runs and runs and the tigers are getting closer and closer. When she comes to the edge of a cliff, she sees some vines there, so she climbs down and holds on to the vines. Looking down, she sees that there are tigers below her as well. She then notices that a mouse is gnawing away at the vine to which she is clinging. She also sees a beautiful little bunch of strawberries close to her, growing out of a clump of grass. She looks up and she looks down. She looks at the mouse. Then she just takes a strawberry, puts it in her mouth, and enjoys it thoroughly. Tigers above, tigers below. This is actually the predicament that we are always in, in terms of our birth and death. Each moment is just what it is. It might be the only moment of our life; it might be the only strawberry we’ll ever eat. We could get depressed about it, or we could finally appreciate it and delight in the preciousness of every single moment of our life.”
