Reconstruction of Warsaw
Virtual Presentation
hosted by the St Louis County Library

Dec. 5, 2020, 2 PM CST

In 1944, Warsaw, a one-million-strong metropolis in the very heart of Europe and the capital of a nation of 33 million, ceased to exist. At the time of its destruction, the city boasted a more than six-century-long history, marked by moments of both glory and heroism as well as humiliation and decline. The post-war reconstruction of Warsaw was an unprecedented undertaking. In the end, postwar Warsaw became a fusion of two contradictory ideas: to rebuild select historic buildings and sites and to develop the urban space according to socialist principles. And this fusion was influenced by practical considerations that took precedence over all else.   The Warsaw story revolves around struggles for independence, consequences of foreign oppressions, ideas of what the modern city should look like, and compromises made during the reconstruction process.

WE NEED YOUR
SUPPORT
MORE THAN EVER

Saint Louis Polonia Inc, as with many organizations finds itself in uncharted territory. Like many other organizations, we thrive on social and educational events and interactions. COVID-19 has obviously limited our abilities to organize events and ultimately fund-raise. It has been a challenge and we need your help. We remain volunteer-only, with no paid staff motivated by love for our rich heritage.

We recognize that there are many causes and organizations which are close to your heart. Please consider us in your charitable support plans and help us spread the word on the value that comes with strengthening our community.

Sexual Morality in the People's Republic of
Poland
Virtual Presentation
hosted by the St Louis County Library

January 30, 201, 10 AM CST
This talk explores the evolution of official perceptions of homosexuality in postwar Poland, from the consolidation of communist rule in 1945 to its ultimate demise in 1989.  I focus on sexual behavior as a form of non-conformity and challenge to the system that sought total control and cultural homogeneity.  The party-state’s response to the potential danger of sexual non-conformity differed little from postwar Western European governments. But instead of gradual liberalization of approaches to same-sex relations in the West that took place since the 1960s, both the communist
and Catholic legacies made Poland particularly intolerant toward homosexuality.
