Letter from our New Counselor

Hello,

I’m Jessica Blei and I’m happy to be here. I've spent my whole career working with children and families. First as a special educator in Baltimore, then as a Mental Health Therapist in day treatment, alternative, and traditional schools. After a few interesting years as a counselor for a nonprofit open adoption agency I found myself missing the school setting, and when I returned as a school counselor, I knew I had made the right choice. The opportunity to work with a team to support students thriving is the most direct impact to the community that I have experienced and I am proud to be a part of it.

After moving around a lot as a kid and young adult I settled in NE Portland 12 years ago. I am raising my two boys with my husband Jake, a Family Therapist. Baxter is 13, taller than me and would really like a dog. Charlie just turned ten, hasn’t overtaken me yet, and also really wants a dog. While we continue to discuss animal ownership we enjoy exploring, hiking, camping, good food and watching Mandalorian together. As long as I have been a parent, I have been a PPS parent and I am thrilled for the opportunity to contribute to the mission and vision of this district.

Sincerely,
Jessica Blei

* Information related to school activities/events

* Announcements of general community interest (neighborhood events, fundraisers)
This is not intended as a forum for debate, even on important issues that impact our kids.

We’re looking for Room Parents!

Room Parents volunteer time and energy in various ways to support their child’s class and teacher. There are usually multiple Room Parents in each class, especially in the lower grades, so the work can be divided.
In past years, Room Parents have done the following:

Classroom Directory (fall) - Develop a classroom directory early in the school year with information such as parent/child names, email addresses, and phone numbers.
Special Events (throughout the school year) - Coordinate class parties by communicating with parents and creating sign-up lists for party needs such as volunteers, drinks, popcorn, napkins, etc. If your class families would like to contribute to a class gift for your teacher at the winter holidays, Teacher Appreciation Week in May, or at the end of the school year, collect money and purchase gifts/gift cards.
Classroom auction projects - These may take a different form this year. We will call on volunteers for auction projects later in the school year.
Field trips and day-to-day classroom help

The role of the Room Parents may be quite different this year and vary from teacher to teacher.  If you are able and interested in helping as a Room Parent, please let us know!  Send an email to
ptavolunteers@supportabernethy.org with the following information: Your name, email address, child’s name, teacher’s name. Your PTA Volunteer Coordinators and/or teachers be in touch with you as needs arise.  Questions? Contact Lindsey or Murielle at ptavolunteers@supportabernethy.org.

Southeast Guiding Coalition for Enrollment and Program Balancing update

The Enrollment and Program Balancing process continues as Kellogg Middle School opens in 2021 while a second comprehensive middle school, Harrison Park, also opens in 2022. The focus of this phase of the process is beginning with the Southeast community around:

  • Reopening Kellogg Middle School

  • Converting Harrison Park from a K-8 to Middle School

  • Identifying their feeder patterns and engaging the school communities that may be potentially reconfigured from K-8’s to K-5’s

Work recently began with a committee called the Southeast Guiding Coalition for Enrollment and Program Balancing to guide the process this fall, with a recommendation to the board of education in early 2021. This committee consists of Southeast community members, school principals and district administrators. They held their third meeting last night.

At that meeting, the coalition received an introduction to data used to evaluate enrollment and program balancing options and began to review a draft springboard presentation of possibilities. This is a starting point of possible options for the Southeast Guiding Coalition to think about,  and they will continue to work together in October to ask questions and develop additional versions of a possible plan.

As a community, you also have opportunities to give feedback and input.  Starting October 2, some families will receive a phone call to take a survey to help inform the process. The Coalition is approaching this work through the lens of racial equity and social justice. Therefore, the target segments are grades 5-8, students of color, and students enrolled in dual language immersion.

There will also be an opportunity to take the survey online soon. The SE Guiding Coalition will host Virtual Open Houses on October 22 and December 3, 2020 so you can see and respond to the proposals they have developed. I will share more info next week with details of how to join those meetings and links to the survey.

I will provide regular updates on the SE Guiding Coalition’s progress.  You can also stay informed by reviewing materials posted on their website and livestreaming their meetings.
