South Burdon organiser's comments

We ran our minimalist Virtual Orienteering (VOC) event at South Burdon Wood, after unfortunately having to cancel the Sprint event planned for the same day at Hardwick Park (due to a late change of mind by Durham County Council). It was a bit 'touch and go' for the South Burdon Wood event as well, as Forestry England finally gave us permission on Thursday 24th September – two days before event.

It was a bit chilly and windy for me to want to sit in the beer garden so, after using the middle of the car park for a bit, I moved the maps to another holding place! See the photo on the right. They still tried to escape! Many thanks to the team who put together the map and courses during lockdown back in May, and to everyone who came along and enjoyed the area and discovered that the woods do bite back – although going round them means you run further, it's faster than going through them!  Also, it's harder to navigate when you don't have a control flag to lead you in at the end.  Very good training for us all! The mushroom soup and garlic mushrooms afterwards in Platform 1 were very nice as well.

As this was a Virtual Orienteering event, the courses will remain available in MapRun if you want another go or some winter training. Just print off your own map – or ask me for a waterproof map (except the Medium course, which we are now out of), £1.50 each, pick up from our home on your way to the start! Just email / message me.

Jon Williams

We are sad to advise the news that Jon Williams passed away last Thursday from pneumonia. Jon was a long standing member of CLOK right from the early days, and has contributed a huge amount to the club, as well as some impressive athletic achievements of his own. Our thoughts are with Shelly and family.

Adrian Barnes

It is with much sadness that we also report Adrian Barnes from NATO passed away last Friday. Adrian was a strong force within NATO for many years, as well as across the whole region. He acted as planner, organiser, and controller, as well as doing a lot of NATO's mapping, and was also a successful orienteer himself, at his peak running for GBR in WOC 1978 in Norway.

Organisers wanted

We are still looking for organisers to volunteer  for:-
  • Hemlington Lake on 16th November (which we already have access permissions for)
  • Stockton Riverside on 13th December (which just needs permission for the car parking)
Any one of our experienced Organisers are happy to coach someone willing to try out the role for the first time.

Saunders Mountain Marathon

With no mountain marathons happening this year (the OMM just recently announced it was off), the Saunders MM folk have set up a 6 hour score virtual orienteering course in the Howgills. So if you need your mountain marathon fix, this is for you! Details here.

Upcoming events

For many events there is NO entry on the day, and you MUST pre-enter (sometimes by several days in advance). Also several events still indicate they are pending permissions. Please see individual club websites for more details.
