Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #468 - 29 September 2020

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community? Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

28 September, from the Sydney Morning Herald: NorthConnex's final weeks: inside the race to open Australia's deepest road tunnel
"... still some weeks away..."

28 September, from NSW Road Safety: Double demerits are in force Friday 2 to Monday 5 October inclusive.
Get caught speeding, using a mobile phone illegally, or not wearing a seatbelt or motorcycle helmet this long weekend, and you’ll face double the points.
25 September, from Ku-ring-gai command: Locked vehicle in driveway causes would-be thief to look for an easier target.
We often post that break and enters and steal from motor vehicles happen within our Command. We post tips and friendly reminders to lock your vehicles whether they are parked in the street, your driveway, under the carport or in your garage. If this video isn’t testament to locking your vehicle when at home, then we don’t know what is.

23 September, from Ku-ring-ga command: Graffiti costs the NSW Government and residents more than $300 million every year.
What is graffiti? To some it is art and to others it is expression and to others, simply a mindless act of vandalism. To police it is illegal; it is vandalism; it is unsightly, and it is very costly to our community. The type of graffiti we see around in and around our Command is nothing more than an unsightly blight on the surface of our beautiful suburbs, damaging play equipment, sporting facilities, trees, buildings, picnic areas, where families gather to enjoy a day out. Unfortunately, there are those who are selfishly determined to deface others property, both private and public (taxpayer funded). Our bushland, parks, ovals and public open spaces are what attracts people to our wonderful area. The views overlooking our waterways are second to none, and yet, there are those who would wantonly damage what isn’t theirs, depriving us of wonderful, clean welcoming areas within which we can otherwise enjoy ourselves.

When you see a group of people engaging in antisocial behaviour, please call police immediately. Antisocial behaviour encompasses graffiti, the consumption of alcohol, the taking of drugs, a group of hooligans. If you see someone in the act of graffitiing, please call police immediately.
How to report to police:
  • ‘000’ Triple zero - For emergencies or life threatening situations
  • ‘131 444’ Police Assistance Line – For non emergencies.
  • ‘1800 333 000’ To provide crime information – you can remain anonymous.

The photographs were taken from a Neighbourhood watch group in our command, of one area recently affected by mindless acts of vandalism.

23 September, from Ku-ring-gai command: Thank-you Mount Kuring-gai Public School.

28 September, Shared with permission from the St Ives Community group from 2 days ago: Hello St Ives (Chase) community
My post comes as a WARNING to be vigilant as we were attempted to be broken into tonight about 11.30pm. They tried to pull open my sons small bathroom window from our second story to gain access. Luckily he was still awake and scared the brazen person from the roof. The Gordon/Hornsby police were quick to respond and told us that there have been a spate of robberies in our area. I would have no way thought that this very high small window would have been a cause for concern. Please make sure your windows and doors are locked and be vigilant to report any suspicious persons straight away. I hope this helps someone not be in the same predicament we find ourselves tonight.
27 September, from 9Now: Chilling audio of 'disgraceful' new scam released by ATO
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has released chilling audio of a sophisticated new robo-phone scam doing the rounds. In the phone recording, an automated voice can be heard saying: "Your account has been marked delinquent on account of tax avoidance. "As our letters sent to your registered address have also returned unsigned, and undelivered, resulting into a petition note to be filed against your name, including a warrant for your arrest".

Full article here.

27 September, Shared with permission from the Galston Families group: You’ve probably noticed some of the new gum trees planted at the roundabout at Galston Rd and Mid Dural Rd on the library side, have died.
At closer inspection, they’ve been deliberately cut at the base. Vandalism at its best.

27 September, from NSW Road Safety: If you’re heading out on a road trip these school holidays, please remember to:
  • Always follow road rules and stay under the speed limit
  • Get plenty of rest before your drive and plan regular breaks along the way
  • Keep your hands off your phone
  • Look out for bicycle riders and motorcyclists
  • Make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt and children are safely secured in their car seats
26 September, Shared with permission from Mt Colah/ Kuring-gai Families group yesterday: Disappointing to find this on my morning walk at Foxglove Oval.
For those on here that have the connections would you please assist in reporting as I will be leaving for work soon.

26 September, from Telegraph.com.au: KNUCKLE DUSTER THREAT: MAN’S TIRADE AT SHOP STAFF OVER CIGARETTE LIGHTER
[This article is behind a paywall and we don't have an account, apologies.]

25 September, Shared with permission from the Gordon Community group: **Gordon Thief**
Does anyone recognise this perpetrator? He is notoriously known for stealing packages from apartment buildings. Most recently, Saturday 19 September @ 12:15pm from Gordon Grange on Merriwa Street. Police are to be advised, following receipt of video footage. Any help is appreciated!

25 September, from Fairfield is Where I Live: I recently got some email purporting to be an Apple Notification.
I reported it to Apple and was impressed by how quickly it responded. Apple advised that it was a phishing attempt. See pics. Take care.

24 September, a reminder from Northern Beaches command: NSW law requires drivers leaving their vehicles on a road, with no-one else in them, to ensure they're secured.
The legislation defines leaving the vehicle as anything more than three metres away. By secure, it means:
  • parking brake on
  • engine off
  • keys out of the ignition
  • windows up
  • doors locked.
Exemptions include delivery drivers stopping and getting in and out frequently. Penalty for not complying: $116.
24 September, Shared with permission from the Pymble and West Pymble Community group; This morning I arrived to the community garden and found it vandalised.
Beyond frustrated for sure. While nothing was broken, our watering system was pulled out and plants upturned. We are really disappointed that someone thought it was ok to do this. We will be checking CCTV and making a police report. Please don’t destroy our hard work.

23 September, Tonight we were contacted with this warning to share with the community:
Red and yellow waste bins put out for collection last Friday morning were stolen around 3am, a neighbour heard a vehicle and bins being moved, from Alan Road, Berowra Heights. 4 Bins were stolen, partly filled. After being replaced by Hornsby Council on Monday, 2 bins, red and yellow where discovered today, Tuesday 22nd, outside the netball courts in Berowra Waters Road. Why would anyone need these bins and then discard them again locally? In future we will paint the property number to be seen
quite prominently. Homeowners beware and stay vigilant.
NHW response was to check this had been reported to the Police Assistance Line 131 444. Every little detail reported goes towards building a bigger picture.
Taken from "Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for New Neighbours":

Tip #1: Identify your 6 IMMEDIATE NEIGHBOURS — 2 TO YOUR LEFT, 2 TO YOUR RIGHT, ACROSS FROM AND BEHIND YOU.  Make an effort to get to know them and swap contact details.
Tip #2: SUGGEST AN ARRANGEMENT WITH NEIGHBOURS FOR WHEN ANY OF YOU ARE ON VACATION, eg for clearing the local newspapers, putting out & retrieving garbage bins, clearing mailboxes, parking in driveways/spaces, etc.
Tip #7: LOOK AT YOUR HOME, GARDEN, SHED, & IMMEDIATE NEIGHBOURHOOD AS IF YOU WERE A BURGLAR. What gives you cover from being seen? Where is the quick get-away? Have you sensor lighting? Are your windows & doors secure? Invite a teenage relative to try and get into your home. Can they climb up to balconies? Fit through gaps? Request a FREE Security Audit from the CPO.
Tip #8: BEWARE DOOR-TO-DOOR OFFERS OF WORK FROM ROGUE TRADESMEN. Only use tradies recommended to you, or that you have researched. Register for your FREE Welcome Basket to see local businesses & services: www.welcomebasket.com.au.
Tip #9: CONSIDER HAVING THE LOCKS CHANGED/UPDATED/RE-KEYED. RE-PROGRAMME NEW ALARM CODES FOR THE BURGLAR ALARM.
