Hello Lovely Reader

Firstly, thank you to everyone who got in touch about the extract of my new book I posted last month - it was lovely to hear what you thought of it. And I'm almost ready to pass it back to my editor 🤩

Well, what can I say? I schedule these newsletters and I had a whole paragraph about how wonderful it was to get back to work. Then last night, we were told we'll be entering another lockdown on Thursday. Not a complete lockdown - schools will remain open - so 50% of my household will continue as normal, 50% will not.

There is a small silver lining to this year. I've always wondered if I had the motivation and discipline to be a full-time writer, to sit at my desk day after day and work solidly for hours on end. And it turns out I do. Despite suffering general anxiety of watching my bank balance dwindling, I've been quite productive over the past seven months I think I can safely say being a full-time writer is my goal.

According to a survey, 91% of office workers in the UK would like to remain working from home. Just think what that would mean to the environment, the local economy, and people's well-being, in the long-term. It's not for everyone, but wouldn't it be great if employers listened to what their staff wanted. It would mean this year wasn't a complete write-off, it was just an ill-timed experiment.

A quick round-up

It's been another busy month for me. I had an essay published as part of Vine Leaves Press's SPILL IT! series of newsletters, arguing that we need depressing fiction in our lives,

On my blog, I've been featuring authors from my publisher, Vine Leaves Press. I keep meaning to link to them, so here are the first three - poet Bauke Kamstra, author and photographer Melanie Faith, and flash fiction author Jayne Martin.

I was interviewed myself, on Lorraine Mace's blog - discussing what I wanted to be when I grew up, what my writing day looks like, and whether I Google myself.

And finally, I switched up my official author pic to this smiley one. I posted options on my Facebook page and asked people to vote, because there's only so long you can look at your own face before you start to hate it.
This month, I have mostly been...
Reading... about tarot cards, palm reading, and past lives for a book idea I'm starting to have. Mostly, I've been online for this, but if you have any book suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

.
Planning... new workout classes. I lead circuit training classes when there isn't a global pandemic, but sharing equipment and moving around the room into other people's space is a definite no-no, so I got creative.

From the six classes I managed to take, I had good feedback 😊
Book Spotlight

Cat & The Dreamer was the first book I had published, in 2012. It was the result of two ideas smashed together - the story of a woman who daydreamed a lot and idea of suicide pacts, which seemed to be in the news quite a lot around that time.

The daydreams of the main character, Julia, are loosely based on ones I had at the time - especially one about a bus driver going AWOL with all of his passengers on board. They were the fun parts to write, while I was dealing with the seriousness of her suicide attempt.

The book was only published as an eBook, and it's still available on Amazon if you'd like to read it.
Thanks for reading. See you next month!
