News and Updates from the Crescent College Past Pupils Union

October 2020

<<First Name>>

Dear Golfers,
On behalf of Crescent College Past Pupils Union I would like to thank you all for your participation in this years Ignatian Challenge Cup, hosted by the Limerick Golf Club.

Once again this year, even in unprecedented times of pandemic, the event has proven to be a great success, with again a wonderful turnout.
I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the management and staff of the Limerick Golf Club for having the course and facilities in their usual pristine condition. I know our golfers appreciated this greatly.

Above all I would like to thank our dedicated golf committee for their tireless work in bringing this years competition to fruition, when at times during the present difficulties, it may have been easier to defer the event.

We appreciate the continued support we get from our members for all the events that are undertaken, and even though these have been severely curtailed this year, we will continue to endeavour to promote the association through such undertakings going forward.

In a most unusual year when so many sporting and social events have been cancelled the Ignatian Challenge Cup was a welcome respite and the turnout of past pupils, crescent staff and some friends of crescent was excellent and a great day was enjoyed by all who participated

Once again the weather was kind, the wind was fair and the course in Limerick Golf Club was in excellent condition.

The scorecards came in with some excellent scores and the winner was Wilton Dennehy (43 points) closely followed by Chris Cullinan (41 points) with a score which would have secured the cup in any other year. Congratulations Wilton and well played Chris!

We’d like to thank all those who made the event possible.

  • Limerick Golf Club, clubhouse staff & catering
  • The Golf Committee and members of the Past Pupils Union who manned the desk on the day
  • Our sponsors who donated prizes and funds – without you this event would not be possible

Due to the current COVID protocols for golf we were unable to make a presentation of the cup or prizes on the day.  We hope to make the official presentation to the winner at a later date and have arranged for the other prizes to be delivered to those listed above.

CRESCENT BOOK CLUB

A member of the Crescent class of 1964 and double Munster Schools Rugby Cup winner (1961 and 1963), Ivan Morris is the author of seven books (all on golf) as well as a regular contributor as a columnist to many magazines and newspapers at home and abroad.  To mark the 125th anniversary (1983-2018) of the Irish Ladies Golf Union Ivan undertook extensive research to gather, in great detail, the achievements of generations of the great, Irish women golfers whom are the subject of this lavishly illustrated and succinctly written book.

John Whelan is a double past pupil of Crescent graduating in both 1977 & 1978 (don't ask it’s a long story apparently).  His first foray into writing is in the genre of crime, thriller & mystery and is called Run from the Devil and it has been received well with excellent reviews on Amazon. Hopefully this book is the first of many for John.

His author profile on Amazon states ... "John was born in Limerick. He worked as a publisher for twenty odd years, then as a consultant and currently works with an auction business in Dublin.  He has no need for a door bell as he shares his house with a psychotic chihuahua."
