Hi everyone,
I hope your autumn has got off to a nice start. This is a time of year for many of us when work is at its busiest and the summer lull is a distant memory. Things are quietly continuing in the NEaT organization, coronavirus restrictions notwithstanding. We’ve started planning our mini-conference next April (on which more below) and we’ve got a panel discussion about punctuation coming up next week (register if you haven’t already!). The board hasn’t met since the last newsletter but will do so on the 27th. Have a nice October and don’t hesitate to get in touch with me personally or any member of the board if you have any questions.

Save the date: English as a Lingua Nordica mini-conference, 14 April 2021
The times they are a-changin’, and so is our offering of events. We are proud and happy to let you know we’re planning our next major event in cooperation with Nordic Culture Point, to be held in their premises in Helsinki on 14 April 2021. Save the date and expect some fine presentations and talks for English-language professionals working in the Nordic countries.
Nordic Culture Point is an institution of the Nordic Council of Ministers which works to support Nordic co-operation in the area of culture and to increase awareness of Nordic culture in Finland. Whether punctuation makes you feel like this or it’s one of your favourite things, join the debate. With presenters born in the US and UK who work with English in a range of roles, we will cover how and when to use these different types of punctuation and the impacts they have.
The presenters are NEaT members Rebecca von Bonsdorff (English teacher and teacher trainer), Vanessa Fuller (instructor and revisor), and Kate Sotejeff-Wilson (translator, editor and writing retreat facilitator).

Reminder of an upcoming sister association event: SENSE Jubilee Workshops online
NEaT and SENSE members John Linnegar and Joy Burrough-Boenisch, among others, are giving lectures in November as part of the SENSE #JubileeWorkshops online. Peer organisation introduction: Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading CIEP
The Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), is a non-profit body promoting excellence in English language editing. They set and demonstrate editorial standards, and they are a community, training hub and support network for editorial professionals – the people who work to make text accurate, clear and fit for purpose.
The CIEP has about 3,000 editorial professional members in the UK and abroad who work for a wide range of clients – publishers, businesses, government and other organisations, academic institutions and authors. It has different levels of membership from entry to advanced professional and offers a wide range of editing and proofreading training, especially online.

Or attend the next CIEP Conference online via Zoom Webinars on 2–4 November 2020. The conference will feature entertaining sessions on a variety of subjects, including creating style sheets, making sure your website works for you, and a Q&A with Susie Dent. If you can’t make it to any of the sessions because of time differences or other commitments, recordings will be available for all delegates for three months afterwards. The programme is up and booking is now open.
