ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RETIREMENT OF SAA’S
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of our Executive Director Sandra Burnett. Sandra’s last working day will be December 31, 2020.

Sandra has been the guiding force of Salem Art Association for the last 11 years. Sandra’s hard work, commitment, and dedication to the arts over her career spanning 40 years and multiple continents are worthy of admiration. Sandra has been a resourceful and entrepreneurial leader, with a strong passion for the promotion of social justice and equity in the Salem community.

Sandra has established a portfolio of success in fundraising, organizational development, and relentless advocacy for the nonprofit sector. Sandra is a seasoned, dynamic leader with experiences derived from an executive career mostly in the arts, but also with experience in education, human services and behavioral sciences.  Under her leadership, Salem Art Association has flourished, moving from a financially tenuous organization into a more stable and forward-looking platform for the future of arts in Salem. Filling Sandra’s shoes will be a very difficult task indeed.
Sandra plans on pursuing her own long-delayed career as an artist in the coming years. On behalf of everyone involved with Salem Art Association, we thank her for her countless contributions to the association and Salem as a whole. We wish Sandra the best of luck and would like to part with this quote: “Retirement is not the end of the road. It is the beginning of the open highway”.

A MESSAGE FROM SANDRA BURNETT

“It is with some regret that I am announcing my departure from Salem Art Association as of December 31st 2020. At this stage, retirement beckons, and I am ready for a complete change of life."

"SAA has been my life and my obsession for the last 11+ years and leaving will be difficult indeed. For those who have been at my side over this time, you know how much we have come through – creating financial stability, Access Art and the ADA compliant/annex renovation, the Centennial Project and the commemorative sculpture, and now the year of the pandemic. We have indeed come a long way together! I will always remember you all (boards, donors, funders, members, Gallery Guides etc.) and the amazing commitment you have to your community and the arts sector that underlies its vivacity.

I leave knowing that despite the pandemic SAA is in good shape financially and programmatically. The current staff group is focused, talented, and working as a tight team, often in new and adaptive areas of programming. I cannot say enough about their creativity, commitment, and teamwork.  They are SAA’s greatest asset.”
