Hello <<First Name>>

I hope you are well!

It is nice to be seeing more of the sun now that we are into daylight savings. Labour Weekend is just around the corner, time to clean the barbie.

I have got plenty of interesting things for you to read this newsletter:

  • We have just had the inaugral Malnutrition Week (Oct 4th - 6th).
  • Iron Awareness Week, which was at the end of August.
  • My new role at the local paper (Mahurangi Matters).
  • September and October '12 for 2020 resolutions' to share.
  • Finishing up with a recipe - a copy to download plus a link to a video of it on You Tube.
There links to other websites or files you can download and read at another time, if you are after more information on the topics I've covered.

Kind regards
Nicole

Malnutrition Awareness Week

This year was the inaugural Malnutrition Awareness Week Australia/NZ campaign with the theme: Have we missed a diagnosis?

The campaign spotlighted the common malnutrition paradox of people appearing relatively healthy, but then showing signs and symptoms of malnutrition once you do a little investigating.  Whether you live in a small body or a large body, are old or young; you may be at risk of malnutrition.

If you are wondering whether you or a loved one may be at risk of malnutrition, and you have questions about what to do, please call (021419518) or email me.

Iron Awareness Week

At 7 months old a baby needs more iron than their Dad!!
Isn’t that just mind-blowing?!?
An adult male needs 8mg of iron a day... but a 7 month old baby needs 11mg (breastfeeding Mum needs 9-10mg).

The 2020 Iron Awareness Week (24th – 30th Aug) campaign focused on babies and toddlers.
Could you be low in iron? A checklist of iron deficiency symptoms with icons.
We often hear about how iron deficiency is an issue for many women in New Zealand; around 1 in 14 females over 15 years old have low iron levels.
It also turns out that 14% of children under the age of 2 are iron deficient.

The symptoms in the picture are for adults and children.
Symptoms for low iron levels in your baby or toddler are very similar but other signs may include:
  • being clingy to parent or caregiver,
  • reduced appetite,
  • reduced weight gain or ‘failure to thrive’.
If you are concerned about your child’s iron status talk to your doctor first.

My role as a columnist at the Mahuangi Matters has changed. For the past 4 years I have been contributing to the Cuisine column. Now I am a contributor to the Health column. You will still be able to find recipes to inspire you in these newsletters but also if you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, and on my website.
Here is an introduction to my first Health column. The section of the paper it was published in was just before Father's Day so I focused on nutrition for men.

Men's Nutrition Shot of a man's arm, flexing the bicep.

When it comes to nutrition males seem to be mostly left to muddle along. Chances are, they take better care of their car or favorite gadget than they do their body. However, it is important for males to pay attention to their own set of nutritional needs.

Males generally have a greater proportion of muscle mass and a higher body weight than females, so they have overall higher nutritional requirements. This means that they have greater energy requirements to fuel their body, but they also have to consider more subtle nutrient needs.

De-clutter your closet
Spring is a good time for some spring cleaning... or in this case clearing out. Spring is a great time to de-clutter your wardrobe. To get rid of those ‘I might wear/fit/need it one day’ items. Most of us tend to wear the same clothes over and over; some things stay tucked in the back of the wardrobe just in case and end up never seeing the light of day.
Click the button below to find out my 6 top tips for de-cluttering your closet.

Eat More Nachos!
Friday night Nachos has become a bit of a tradition in our house. So much so that friends and family know that if they get a dinner invite for a Friday night they will be served nachos. And they aren’t just any old nachos – they are VEGETARIAN!

However, they are so good that even the staunchest meat-eater in your house will enjoy them. I am amazed at how many people request this recipe when they have been for Nacho Friday.
