THAT'S SO DALLAS
What’s more Texan than a cowboy hat? Maybe an Oak Cliff fedora. Hat-maker Cassie MacGregor had to give up her brand-new Bishop Arts District showroom earlier this year because of economic hard times. But she spent her summer finishing out a studio in her Oak Cliff backyard and is now operating House of MacGregor there. She just released her fall collection, designed specifically for a post-COVID lifestyle. HOM Core is a line of unisex fedoras in several colors and brim styles priced under $200. One design is more Dallas than the rest of them. The Landry pays tribute to the Dallas Cowboys sainted football coach Tom Landry. "When I have a client looking for a traditional shape, this is the one I gravitate towards every time," MacGregor says. (Oak Cliff Advocate)

THE CATCH-UP
Coronavirus: Dallas County reported 335 confirmed cases, one probable case and four deaths Oct. 12. (Details

Murder rate up: Homicides in Dallas are on track to surpass last year's record-breaking rate. Violent crime overall has increased. There have been 178 homicides so far this year. September alone had 488 aggravated assaults and 24 homicides. (KDFW)

Speed bumps: One City Council district is trying something new to curb racing. Temporary cones are up on Hampton Road in Oak Cliff. The city will assess whether altered traffic patterns could deter racers. (KXAS

Outside problems: Coronavirus spurred an increase of homeless encampments in parks. The city found $210,000 in the budget to clean up. But what about the chronic homelessness? (Dallas Morning News

Canceled: The annual Crystal Charity Ball, the biggest social event of the fall social season, has been canceled this year for the first time since 1963, following the JFK assassination. (Culture Map)

Kudos: The 2020 Built Design Honor Awards recognized all of the fancy and interesting work from Dallas architecture firms. The Pittman Hotel and Pacific Plaza Park were among the honorees. (Paper City

More Kudos: Six Dallas Hotels scored wins in Condé Nast Traveler's Reader's Choice Awards. Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek took the No. 1 spot in Texas. The Adolphus, Virgin Hotels, Hotel Zaza, Crescent Court and Hall Arts all placed in the top 20 statewide. (Condé Nast Traveler)

TRENDING: LEVI'S IS THRIFTING

Thanks, Macklemore! Thrifting and reselling clothing has become one of the fastest-growing sectors of retail. To capitalize on the fact 60% of Gen Z prefer second-hand finds, Levi’s is taking resale in-house with its own “re-commerce” site. It’s killing two birds with one green stone. Recycling clothes is better for the environment, and reselling Levi’s own jeans lowers production costs and limits discounting, which impacts profit margins. (RobinHood, Left: DFW search trends for thrifting, Poshmark, Levi's and Mercari)

DINING & DRINKS
Literally oodles: Monkey King Noodle Co. opens its newest Dallas location Oct 14. (Lake Highlands Advocate)

Eat cake: Family-owned J. Rae's is opening on Lovers Lane at The Pavilion. The Fort Worth-based concept is opening later this year. (Culture Map)
