Sunday Service times will be changing slightly from Sunday 1st November 2020 onwards to: 8am (Said BCP Communion), 9.30am (Holy Communion Service with choir) 11.15am (Morning Worship with Sunday School)
8am Traditional Communion Service
Last week we re-started the 8am Sunday Service. It is a return to a traditional service and will be carefully socially distanced.
Rather than using Common Worship in traditional language we will offer the service from the Book of Common Prayer. I know this is slightly different from the Common Worship in traditional language service we have used in the past but given the changes we have had to make in light of Covid it would allow us to return to a wider range of liturgy that we are are offering at the moment and give people access to the wonderful words of the BCP. However, if people would rather use Common Worship words and I have misjudged people's feelings about this - please do let me know - I would be happy to use Common Worship.
If you have any thoughts or comments about any of our services about this please do talk to me. Becky (01482 881437)
Hearing the services
We know there have been some glitches with the sound system and we think we have been able to iron them out. After a visit from our sound engineers, the hearing loop is now repaired and the echoing of the system has been reduced.
Please do let us know if you are struggling to hear straight away and we will do all we can to correct the problem.
If you leading any part of the service or reading
please speak slowly and clearly into the microphone
please do not raise the volume
please come 15 minutes early if you would like to help us by doing a sound check
Thank you to the choir
Thank you to Berry and the choir for lifting our worship on Sunday. It was so wonderful to have you back!
Reform, Rebellion, Restoration:
St Mary’s, Beverley & The Tudors
Opening in St Mary’s on 23rd October is an exhibition telling the story of Beverley’s dramatic Tudor history through life-size reproductions of paintings in the National Portrait Gallery:
Visit St Mary’s this autumn to come face to face with some of the most famous figures from this tempestuous period of English history, including Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, and Elizabeth I:
St Mary’s is open 11am-3pm, Mon-Sat, and entry is free. Don’t miss the chance to see high definition facsimiles of these magnificent portraits up close, in a journey around the entire church which casts new light on its Tudor heritage, including the colourful nave roof bosses.
Henry VIII and the Men Who Made Him
A highlight of the exhibition will be a talk on 14th November by Tracy Borman, joint Chief Curator for Historic Royal Palaces. Based on her latest book, ‘Henry VIII and the Men Who Made Him’, Tracy’s talk will delve into the world of Henry’s relations, servants, ministers, rivals, confidantes and companions. The talk will either take place in St Mary’s or – if that’s not possible due to the pandemic – via webcast. Tickets will go on sale via St Mary’s website at 9am on 24th October.
‘An outstanding work of historical artistry, a brilliantly woven and pacy story of the men who surrounded, influenced and sometimes plagued Henry VIII.‘ Alison Weir
Nature & Nurture
We’re proud that the exhibition includes a fringe, showcasing local artistic talent. First up is painter Emma Garness who will be in residence 23rd October – 7th November. Emma’s show is titled ‘Nature & Nurture’ and will be in the South Transept of St Mary’s.
Many people in the area will be familiar with Emma’s large-scale set paintings for theatres including East Riding Theatre. Her most recent work is a huge mural for St Paul’s Boxing Academy in Hull.
Taking inspiration from local walks with her 3 children, ‘Nature & Nurture’ is Emma’s response to Mother Nature and motherhood. It includes a seed exchange so please come along with seeds from your own garden and help yourself to seeds donated by other gardeners.
Foretaste
For a flavour of what’s in store, visit Streamers on North Bar Within (across the road from the church, towards the North Bar) to see our latest display there, which features images of some of the paintings plus photos of some of the artwork in the fabric of St Mary’s which will be highlighted in the exhibition.

Online
Side by side with the physical exhibition in St Mary’s will be a digital version on the church’s website. The digital counterpart will include images of the portraits in the exhibition and the full text written by Dr Jennie England, St Mary’s Heritage Learning Officer.
Below is one of the most iconic portraits highlighted in the exhibition. Click on the image for more information about it on the National Portrait Gallery website:
Visit the National Portrait Gallery website to see other works in its glorious Tudor collection during the gallery’s development period.
On the road
After the exhibition finishes in church, it will be loaned to schools and community venues in the area for free. It is hoped that this will inspire pupils and teachers alike as they explore the wonderful history and art contained in these portraits. Dr England will also be animating the history through free illustrated talks for schools via video conferencing. Any schools or community venues interested in borrowing the exhibition and/or receiving a talk from Dr England are invited to email St Mary’s education team: learning@stmarysbeverley.org
BIG Church Quiz
The BIG church quiz. Saturday 17th October 2020
Zoom in for 7.30 - 9 pm
The annual church meeting will take place on Sunday 25th Octoberat 12.00 noon in Church.
Please bear in mind that the church electoral roll has to be revised in advance of the meeting. The roll is now available to be looked at in the church door for revisions to be made.
The allowed numbers for attendees follows our current guidelines of safe seating for up to 60 people sitting separately (70 people with those sitting in bubbles) but is subject to further Government or Church of England guidance nearer the time and any local restrictions. We will therefore ask people to sign a list if they wish to attend in person.
The reports will be e-mailed out and issued to people without computers and available in the church by Sunday 18 October 2020.
We will try to enable the meeting to be attended via Zoom as well please let us know if you would like to attend by zoom.
1. The APCM is a meeting for all those on the church’s electoral roll. The purpose of this meeting is to receive the reports and to make elections and appointments.
2. The annual meeting of parishioners is a meeting for all those on the church’s electoral roll and all those resident in the parish whose names are on the civil electoral roll of the parish. The purpose of this meeting is to elect the churchwardens. The provisions concerning nomination in section 4 of the Churchwardens Measure 2001 continue to apply and some thought will need to be given as to how the nomination paperwork can be coordinated in advance of the virtual meeting.
3. The new arrangements permit the meeting to take place in a virtual ‘location’ (for example, on an interactive video-conferencing platform such as Zoom) and for voting to take place electronically rather than ‘in person’. It does not change the procedural requirements for the convening of the meeting and notices of it.
Study Course - Goliath must fall
Session 3 - Goliath must fall
You are welcome to join us for the sessions below
(even if you have not made it to other sessions)
Put aside what you may think about the classic David vs. Goliath story.
In Goliath Must Fall, Giglio shows us how to dwell on the size of our God, not the height of our giants. Once we understand the source of our giants, we can ensure that whatever our affliction is, it will fall before the power of Jesus.

Prayers for the week beginning
Wednesday 14th October 2020 (broadcast each evening on Facebook)
A simple form of evening prayer and candle lighting *
At St Mary's we would like to invite you to join us in a short time of prayer every day at 7pm. It involves lighting a candle and placing it in the window and then saying the following prayers as individuals or as households. You can join with others in these prayers on our Facebook page.
The Lord almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end. Amen.
Our help is in the name of the Lord who made heaven and earth.
A period of silence for reflection on the past day may follow.
O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning is now
and shall be for ever. Amen.
The candle is lit and the following prayer is said
Heavenly Father, accept this burning candle as a sign of faith and love.
Like this candle, bring light into our world
Even as this candle is lit may we know your presence
and be consumed in the warmth of your love.
In your mercy, Lord hear our prayer.
In peace we will lie down and sleep; for you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.
Abide with us, Lord Jesus for the night is at hand and the day is now past.
As the night watch looks for the morning so do we look for you, O Christ.
The Lord bless us and watch over us;
the Lord make his face shine upon us and be gracious to us;
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.
