Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, I would like to highlight some of the amazing things happening in fourth and fifth grade.  Mr. Green, Mrs. Gustine, and Mrs. VanMeter have done a great job with these students and it’s noticeable both in their classrooms and in the hallways outside their rooms. For example, hanging outside the fourth grade classroom are some fantastic writing samples in which students reflected on a moment in which they had to “persevere.” These writing samples cover everything from learning how to ride a bike to trying to bake brownies for the first time.

Fourth graders are also busy preparing for their annual celebration of "All Saints Day," learning about many different Catholic saints who have gone before us and set examples for us on how to live our lives always glorifying God.

Fifth graders, in the meantime, are busy learning how to write persuasive five paragraph essays, reflecting on the pros and cons of keeping animals in captivity at a zoo. They have also been learning how to pray the rosary and, in Math, have been working on improving their mastery of multiplication.  At the same time, they continue to find ways to have fun at school, including enjoying Mr. Green’s famous jokes of the day! Enjoy this short video!

Queridos padres y guardianes,

This past Saturday, October 17 th , marked the 10 th anniversary of the canonization of Holy Cross Brother André Bessette. Father Bob Epping, C.S.C., Superior General of the Congregation of Holy Cross Priests and Brothers (and, of course, former pastor of Holy Cross Parish), recently wrote to the family of Holy Cross sisters, brothers and priests on this joyful celebration. I share with you excerpts from his letter: “Frail at birth, orphaned at 12 years of age, and not well educated, his early years were unsettled and tumultuous… This pious young man made his perpetual profession as Brother André Bessette, C.S.C. on February 2, 1874, and received his first assignment as the porter at Collège Notre Dame. “From there his legendary healing ministry and reputation for holiness and miracles grew. Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed this holy, humble, and revered apostle of St. Joseph and friend of the sick and the poor a true saint of the Church on October 17, 2010, in St. Peter’s Square… The whole Congregation [of Holy Cross] has been blessed abundantly because the Lord has raised up a remarkable man in our Brother André. His pastor, Rev. André Provençal, recognized the deeper qualities of a saint in him and brought him to our doorstep, saying, ‘I’m sending you a saint.’ Soon the sick, the poor, and the needy flocked to the ‘man at the door…’”
