From the Team

Just as the pandemic has normalised practices such as SafeEntry check-ins and mask-wearing, it is also reshaping our pre-existing mindsets and behaviours. To discuss these very ideas, the Lien Centre for Social Innovation partnered with the Centre for a Responsible Future to host a series of dialogues, respectively Getting Wide Awake: A Conversation on Social Consciousness and Responsive/Responsible Work and Learning: Why the Future Starts Now. Speakers included Managing Director (APAC) of Hyper Island Melanie Cook; SMU Asst Prof Kenneth Goh; SMU students Ishan Singh and Elyza Carbajal; Singapore Army veteran Frederick Goh; and senior project lead at Tri-Sector Associates Chen Sikai. Catch the full recaps here and here.
Even before Eat Pray Love became a bestselling book that spawned a Hollywood movie, Bali has long captured the popular imagination as a place to escape stress, be spiritual, and reconnect with nature. Dr Alan J. Yu, who spent six years on the island researching Balinese community leadership, met numerous social innovators along the way. In Part 3 of his #EatPlayLaugh series, he shares what the people and culture there taught him about living an artful life.

On finding creative inspiration during a pandemic

“Recognise what you love being good at, and find that safe space where you can get great at what you love being good at.”

—Eunice Rachel Low, Head of Content and Communications at LCSI

What’s Brewing?
Wrapping up our recap on #Thirsty4Change, we meet Dr Harah Chon, the Lecturer-In-Charge for the MA Design programme at LASALLE College of the Arts. Earlier this year, the Lien Centre for Social Innovation and LASALLE embarked on a cross-disciplinary collaboration, in which students attended workshops and reimagined a more sustainable future for bubble tea. After reviewing their design proposals, Dr Chon chats with us about #BBT and the culture of excess. Read the full interview.

Be Inspired!
Ever wonder if it’s possible to make a positive change from our own homes and backyards? University of Pennsylvania undergrad Michelle Cao was looking for innovative ways to help her community while sheltering in place, when she discovered some unexpected heroes in her midst. Take a look.
Given the growing threat of climate change, more businesses are finding innovative ways to respond to the need for more environmentally sustainable practices. At the same time, they have to meet the dual objectives of being socially responsible and financially viable. SMU student Arthur Adimoelja susses out five climate-conscious organisations that have embedded an eco-friendly ethos successfully into their operations.

#YouthStory
Meet Kenneth Wong, a second-year SMU undergrad and founder of Food for the Homeless Singapore. Every Friday around midnight, Kenneth and other volunteers walk the streets to befriend homeless persons, give them rations and other necessities, and connect them with the relevant authorities to secure temporary or permanent housing. The 23 year old shares: “Through donations over the past three months, we were able to deliver 800 fresh meals to 53 homeless individuals residing across six shelters.”

Before You Go
With the global pandemic disrupting former routines and ways of living, Social Space’s multimedia team was curious about what life looks like for young people in other parts of the world. Watch their interview with a Canadian (Melody), an Italian (Pascal) and an American (Thomas), and learn how COVID-19 has redefined a “normal day” for them.
