1833 Just Transition Fund FAQ
Why have we waited until now to collect donations?
We wanted to make sure we had all the facts about which workers were affected and which were rehired and under what terms. Workers received 3 months' severance which has helped to tide them over until now.
Who will receive funds?
90% of funds will be distributed equally among custodians who were fired by Oberlin and not offered jobs by the contractor. The remaining 10% will be for grants to former Oberlin workers facing extreme hardships, in consultation with the union. More information here.
What happens next?
The idea of a "just transition" is that workers who are harmed be made whole. The 1833 Just Transition Fund will continue to collect and distribute donations to provide ongoing support to the workers who were harmed by Oberlin's actions.
Are donations tax-deductible?
Yes. Your donation will go through The Labor Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit that employs two Oberlin alums, and is hosting the Fund, absorbing many of our overhead expenses, and providing professional bookkeeping services. Your donation will be used only for the 1833 Fund.
