INTRODUCING GOOGLE ANALYTICS 4

App + Web properties are officially out of beta and they have a new name: Google Analytics 4.  Click HERE to see the announcement from Google.

What This Means
Universal Analytics is still supported, but GA4 is now the default experience when you create a new property, and it is where Google's investment is focused.  Lots of new features and upgrades are rolling out to GA4 over the next few months, starting with the four that I've listed below.

New Releases & Features

Custom Definitions

Hit-scoped custom dimensions and metrics are now live.  This is possible because event parameters can now be associated with multiple events, which solves the implementation challenges created by parameter limits in App + Web properties.

Internal Traffic Filters

Allows you to define and filter internal or developer traffic using IP address or an event parameter.

Event Editing

Enables customers to edit events and their parameters in Google Analytics 4 properties without code changes.  Additionally, makes it possible to create new conversion events based on a parameter value without requiring a unique event.  For example, when "page_view" event fires and the page_location contains "thank-you".

Cross-Domain Tracking (beta)

Cross-domain tracking will soon be configurable in the UI without any changes to your tracking code!  This feature is currently in a closed beta, but it represents a significant upgrade to a pain point in Universal Analytics and showcases the benefits of gtag.js.
