Success for Each Child and Eliminate the Opportunity Gap by Leading with Racial Equity

October 2020
Feedback/Questions/Requests CLICK HERE - We'd love to hear from you!

Welcome Fall 2020!

I hope that the onset of Fall is agreeing with you – my family and I have been marveling at the beauty and patterns in the ginormous spider webs we have been noticing!

This month, Remy and I received a request for help thinking about how to support our youngest learners and their teachers. We thought that rather than sending just one email, we would share our initial thinking here, and then open up a dialogue with all of you in how to do this important work. If you teach older children, I suspect there is transfer! Even adults do best when activity, movement and fun are baked into their days.  Remy and I know we do not have THE answer, but we’ve got some resources to share. We have also created a Discussion in our PSESD District Math Leaders Canvas Course. You can click here to enroll in the course (if you haven’t before) and participate in the discussion! (You can also start new discussions!)

Theresa Wills has MANY free resources including templates and professional development sessions that you can access online and watch at your own time and speed. In particular, she has a session called Early Learners PK 1 teaching remotely in which she talks about ways to involve students who are in their very earliest stages of learning. She also has a session called Classroom Community for All (especially grades K – 2 which details ways to develop community virtually. Theresa also has many strategies and resources for grades 3 – 12 on her site: https://www.theresawills.com/

We have also recently discovered a site with virtual engagement strategies that don’t require webcams by Xi Yu called Dismantling Mathematics that we are excited to explore. Ms. Yu shares lots of strategies to engage students both in whole class and breakout sessions.

Another lovely resource is Math At Home from the Math Learning Center where you can find thought-provoking math activities, games, and practice pages. Math at Home aligns with Bridges in Mathematics but can be used with any program. The Math Learning Center also offers a recorded session with strategies, activities, and technologies for engaging students in synchronous online learning: Moving Math from the Classroom to the Living Room

Dan Meyer and Bethany Lockhart have started a virtual Math Teacher Lounge where they interview guests and always include math games while they work to figure out distance teaching and learning. The first Episode focuses on creating a safe learning environment for our students.

Lastly, our Regional Math Coordinators across the state are offering free professional learning opportunities to support teachers with remote learning. These can be found by searching for ERL (ESD Remote Learning) and Math in PDEnroller.

And a late-breaking resource shared by my colleague, Carrie Black: from Tracy Johnston Zager and Desmos – Fact Frequency Cards with five, ten or double-ten frame cards!

Best,
Remy & Leslie

PS.We also wanted to share that Leslie gave her first Ignite Talk at the Seattle Secondary Math Conference last week exploring making the case the for 10 - minute talks as a container for equitable math teaching practices.

Race and Equity Conversations in Math

Equitable Math:  A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction is an integrated approach to mathematics that centers Black, Latinx, and Multilingual students in grades 6-8, addresses barriers to math equity, and aligns instruction to grade-level priority standards. The Pathway offers guidance and resources for educators to use now as they plan their curriculum, while also offering opportunities for ongoing self-reflection as they seek to develop an anti-racist math practice. The toolkit “strides” serve as multiple on-ramps for educators as they navigate the individual and collective journey from equity to anti-racism.  Learn More

Professional Development: We are able to meet with you and your district math leaders to construct a professional development program informed by the latest research in the field of mathematics education that is tailored to the needs of your students and teachers. We can:
  • Meet with you and your math leaders to identify needs as well as areas of interest such as Common Core Content, the Standards for Mathematical Practice, and high leverage mathematics teaching practices
  • Conduct professional development sessions targeted at identified needs and areas of interest which are informed by research, on-going, and job-embedded
  • Support math coaches in classroom coaching, debriefing and leading PLCs
  • Support math leaders in conducting district wide instructional materials reviews to consider the match of district needs, research informed best-practices, and available instructional materials
  • Support math coaches and teachers in crafting and leveraging an assessment system that utilizes assessment resources already in place, including summative, interim/benchmark and formative assessments
  • Assist in collaborations within district between math teachers and other departments such as Special Education, English Language Learning, Blended Learning or content areas such as Science.
This is only a partial list. We are eager to work with you to support your students and teachers as we continue implementation of the Washington State Learning Standards and work to close the opportunity gap in mathematics. Please let us know if we can be of service.
