Charles' Favorite:
Magpie Murders
by Anthony Horowitz

It's difficult to describe the way in which Anthony Horowitz's masterful mystery, Magpie Murders, ties a character's "real-life" investigation into the mystery found in the pages of a fictional whodunit without giving too much of the plot away, so I'll just give you the basics here. The book follows editor Susan Ryeland, who has just received her biggest client's newest manuscript, a traditional mystery set in an English village. Before she finishes the book, though, she finds herself involved in a mystery of her own, and somehow the solution seems to reside within the text before her. The fact that the "fictional" tale is as compelling as the "real-life" storyline is a dazzling feat, allowing for the reader to first enjoy a very pleasant tale of small-town murder, reading it along with Ryeland, and then dive into a smart, layered story of literary detective work which examines the pleasures of mystery fiction while also engaging in them. If you're like me and somehow avoided reading this book when it came out, even as it inspired a mountain of praise, I suggest you correct that as soon as possible—and with the sequel coming out next month, there's no time like the present. $16.99.

Facing threats to his life and family, coerced by his former nemesis and fellow forger, Will must rely on the artistic skills of his older daughter Nicole to help create a flawless forgery of this stolen Tamerlane, the Holy Grail of American letters. In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and in front of everybody shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird. McBride brings to vivid life the people affected by the shooting: the victim, the African-American and Latinx residents who witnessed it, the white neighbors, the local cops assigned to investigate, the members of the Five Ends Baptist Church where Sportcoat was deacon, the neighborhood's Italian mobsters, and Sportcoat himself. This week we received signed copies of Death in Her Hands, the latest novel from Ottessa Moshfegh. While on her daily walk with her dog in a secluded woods, a woman comes across a note, handwritten and carefully pinned to the ground by stones. "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body." But there is no dead body. Becoming obsessed with solving this mystery, our narrator imagines who Magda was and how she met her fate. A triumphant blend of horror, suspense, and pitch-black comedy, Death in Her Hands asks us to consider how the stories we tell ourselves both reflect the truth and keep us blind to it. Once again, we are in the hands of a narrator whose unreliability is well earned, and the stakes have never been higher. Signed on a Tip-In Page. $27.00
