Public Comment Open

Request for Flexibility from Federal Accountability Requirements for 2020-2021
IDOE is seeking public comment on its request to the US Department of Education to waive certain federal requirements pertaining to federal accountability for the 2020-2021 school year. This request is in response to the direct impact of COVID-19 on the ability to produce valid, reliable, and comparable accountability data and results for the 2020-2021 school year. Information on IDOE’s request and the public comment submission form may be found here. Public comment will be accepted through December 4. Please send all questions here

1 Percent Cap Waiver Extension Request
IDOE seeks public comment on its request for a waiver extension on the number of students who can be tested using an alternate assessment on annual statewide tests. Indiana anticipates that approximately 1.14 percent of students will be assessed using the alternate assessment during the 2020-2021 school year. Because this exceeds the limit, Indiana must request a waiver extension to the 1 Percent Cap for one year. For additional information about this waiver, please refer to this background information. The proposed waiver extension request is available on IDOE’s website. Written comments will be accepted through November 6. Please contact Stephanie Thompson with questions or concerns.

When Schools Receive Notice of a Positive Case of COVID-19

Once schools receive notice that a student or staff member has tested positive for COVID-19, the school should immediately contact the local health department for verification of the positive case, and to coordinate the school's response. Detailed information regarding the procedures to follow when the school has a positive case can be found on the Indiana State Department of Health COVID-19 website. Schools should no longer report cases of COVID-19 to IDOE.

Please note that Section 4 of the ICSB 2020-21 school year Addendum requires you to notify ICSB (email is fine) within 2 days of a positive test of a person associated with the school, as well as the number and grade level of any students required to quarantine, and the length of the quarantine, as a result of the positive test. Do not identify specific individuals.

Accountability Framework Panel Discussions (November 2020):

These meetings are tentatively scheduled for the following dates:
  • Discussion with Parents & Families Wednesday, November 15
  • Discussion with Educators Thursday, November 16
  • Discussion with Principals & School Admin Monday, November 23
All three events will be scheduled for one hour from 5:30PM – 6:30PM EST

Indiana Kids’ Election

On Nov. 3, students across Indiana can elect their own President, Vice President, Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General in a show of active citizenship through Indiana Kids’ Election (IKE), an award-winning mock election program.

In an effort to increase Indiana’s voter turnout, IKE provides students in grades K-12 with the hands-on experience of voting in a class or school-wide mock election – this year on Nov. 3. With this special emphasis on encouraging students to develop one’s voting habit at an early age, IKE attempts to emulate the election process as closely as possible. Students participate in voting milestones such as registering to vote and casting a ballot on Tuesday, Nov. 3 – just like their parents! More information here: http://inkidselection.com/ * at this time, IKE is no longer accepting registrations, however their curriculum is available for educators via their website.

The Indiana Statehouse Tour Office, in conjunction with the Indiana Center for the Book, holds an essay competition to commemorate Indiana Statehood Day each year. Indiana’s 204th birthday is December 11, 2020. Winners of the essay contest will be honored at a virtual Statehood Day Celebration. The 2020 virtual celebration will take place on December 11, 2020. Group entries and individual entries are accepted each year. More information, including registration, can be found here: https://www.in.gov/library/statehood.htm
