The VIP Team continues to take the show on the road to honor and recognize the 2020 WHIMA Award Recipients!
This week, WHIMA presents the 2020 Distinguished Service Member Award to Amy Hoaglund, RHIA. Amy has been the Team Lead for the WHIMA Fall Conference Team for the past two years, and prior to that she was a member of the team. This team had floundered a bit about 3-4 years ago, and the Board had even considered disbanding and
not having  a Fall
Conference, but with
Amy's help over the
years, the Fall
Conference has made
a strong come-back!
Amy has shown
innovation and creativity in her ideas (and those of her team) to make the Fall Conference an outstanding event. She has also been a strong supporter of the scholarship fundraiser event at the Fall Conference, and always ensures that there are enough baskets and items for that fundraiser, which certainly supports the Professional Development Team in their efforts!
In acceptance of this prestigious award, Amy writes:
“It is with honor that I accept the 2020 WHIMA Distinguished Service Award. I am grateful to Betty Rockendorf for the nomination and to WHIMA for the volunteer opportunity. Leading and facilitating the Fall Conference Committee planning team has been a very rewarding experience in more ways than one. Without the support and efforts of my fellow Fall Conference team members winning this award would not have been possible. It is truly on their behalf that I accept the Distinguished Service Award. I encourage others to volunteer for WHIMA if you aren’t already doing so”

Facility-specific medical coding guidelines improve both consistency and reimbursement, and coding professionals must keep abreast of MS-DRGs and ICD-10-CM/PCS updates as well as all the New Technology Add-On Payments that are applicable to their organization, writes AHIMA-approved trainer Laurie Johnson. Health care facilities should consider additional data needs in the context of quality as well as state and facility-specific reporting requirements, and facility coding guidelines should address coding standards for family medical history, external cause codes and procedure status codes, among others.
