MATAURANGA: Te kuku o te manawa

Advanced Voting started at Waikanae Marae last weekend! 🎉🗳

Let's join together to increase Māori participation in this year's GE and support our marae at the same time!!!!

Hours are:

Monday 12 Oct - Sunday 16 Oct (9am-4pm)

There were 450 voting places opened on Saturday 3 Oct, this number jumped 2,240 voting places by Sunday 11 Oct. Come election day, 2,600 voting places will be available. To find other voting places here 👉 vote.nz/find-a-voting-place-on-a-map/

Turnout since voting opened on Saturday, 3 Oct reached more than 475,000 votes cast in the first five days – far exceeding the 309,000 votes cast in the first five days in 2017.  Enrolment numbers are up too, with 91 per cent of eligible voters enrolled compared with 90 per cent in 2017. Among 18- to-29-year-olds, the increase is even higher – 75 per cent compared with 71 per cent in 2017.  Its the Māori vote that really matters!!!  Unfortunately these figures are not available at this time, but together, let's make a concerted effort to vote whānau.

At the last general election, the māori participation and statistics in our rohe was very strong.  We're confident that we can do better this time too by supporting our own voting place. So pop down to see the cousins and Aunties at the Marae and cast your vote!!!

MĀNGĀTUNA: Kōrero tahi me te whānau

Te Tai Hauāuru candidates, Māori Party Debbie Ngarewa-Packer debated with Labour incumbent Adrian Rurawhe at Whakarongotai Marae on 30 September 2020.

Te Tai Hauāuru, is one of seven Māori seats and electorates in Aotearoa is apart, from the general electorates of New Zealand. The candidates accepted our invitation to korero and korero they did! Unlike most political debates, this was a hui that was respectful of whakapapa and an example of a democracy that is better suited to whānau māori.

Whānau were able to watch the event online and participate by commenting and firing questions for the two candidates and mediators, Dr Mahina-a-rangi Baker, Ruben Toa Kearney Parata to facilitate. With an audience of 2k following the event and over 400 online engagements coupled with 60-80 people in the wharenui, this was a successfully lead event by our rangatahi and we congratulate them on such an informative and rather delightful night of whanaungatanga.

The night was completed with a presentation from whānaunga Janelle Tamihana, mokopuna to Aunty Wai Cooke, who works for the Electoral Commission and encouraged whānau to vote and to make use of our marae that is an Advanced Voting Place. This General Election, the Commission were committed to employ more māori this time as whānau are more likely to seek support or ask patai from their own plus let’s face it, we are experts at manaakitanga!!!

The Hui, from TV3 televised parts of the debate with the intentions to show how we are active in bringing politics to our paepae - to view programme!    Check out our website for more photo's of our night ... see more

WHĀNAU WHAKAORANGA: Waikanae town centre revitalisation – the cultural thread

Te Ātiawa Town Centres Working Group has continued to work with the Council on its town centres project which sees the next stage of the cultural thread in Frater Lane happening between late October and late December 2020.

This work follows on from the completion of stage one of the cultural thread which linked the commuter carpark with Mahara Place in 2018, and the upgrade to Mahara Place in 2019.

The cultural thread is a project that reflects the historic village connection with Whakarongotai Marae and incorporates distinctive paving of cultural significance.

Our Working Group worked with the Council on the design of distinctive paving established in the first stage of the cultural thread and we’ve worked on this next stage as well to influence the designs in Frater Lane.

Work will see a continuation of the distinctive paving from the Marae entrance through Frater Lane. This links the paving design to tāngata whenua and the journey from the Marae to the final resting place at Ruakohatu Urupā.

Stage two work will stop short of the SH1 entrance to Frater Lane which will be completed separately, as part of the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency's investment in the town centre to make SH1 a local road.

Future plans for revitalising the town centre include improved pedestrian access and better connections to the railway station to make it easier to get around. Plans also include making Mahara Lane more visible from SH1 to encourage people into Mahara Place and establishing better cycling and walking connections to the river.
