Dear Watershed Neighbor,

We love bringing Science Talks to our Tryon Creek community. We'll miss gathering in the Lucky Lab, and hope you'll join us over Zoom on Wednesday 10/21, 6-7:30pm. Let's talk about Tryon Creek's fish with two fish biologists, Brook and Chad, from USFWS & BES! This double-feature talk will share about fish survey methods and findings, Tryon Creek's role as a cool-water refuge, and the long-awaited Boones Ferry project. Click here for more details and RSVP directly here

Calling science teachers and parent volunteers: weā€™ve successfully delivered watershed science education to youth via Zoom, and would love to reach your classroom. Our Watershed 101 workshop is flexible, so we can tailor it  -in both topics and duration- for your classroom; details below.
We've been continuing to collaborate with partners, including through stewardship meetings and the ongoing Together for Watersheds collaborative - check out our recent video on banana slugs here!

Indigenous Peoples Day is Monday, October 12th, and an opportunity for us all to listen to, learn from, and amplify Native voices. We encourage you to tune in to some of the various happenings: Portland Indigenous Marketplace will be streaming panels on Facebook live; later that week & weekend, we'll be tuning in to We Are All on Native Land: A Conversation about Land Acknowledgements and Towards Reciprocity: Orca, Chinook Salmon, and the Columbia River

We're eager to share that our first in-person event since March is coming up on October 24th: No Ivy Day at Marshall Park! We're expecting the event to fill quickly, so please sign up soon if you can join us. Thanks to those who tuned in to our two Watershed 101 workshops geared towards the general public - it was really great to meet some of you and share enthusiasm around our watershed's ecology!

Finally, we are delighted to share with you that Tryon Creek Watershed Council has been nominated for West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation Districtā€™s Non-Profit Partner Award. We really enjoy working with WMSWCD, who are a wealth of valuable resources and information. Itā€™s quite an honor to be included with other such effective and innovative organizations that have received this award in the past. Join us for their Annual Meeting celebration via Zoom on October 20th.

Stay safe and well,

Alexis Barton, Council Coordinator & Terri Preeg Riggsby, Executive Director

  • Virtual/Photographic Tour of the Tryon Creek watershed
  • Native and invasive plants
  • Invasive plant removal basics

We are scheduling throughout the school year. With about 3-4 topics the presentation runs about 45 minutes to an hour (depending on topics, level of interactivity, student age group, etc.); we can also explore making the presentation a multi-part series for continued student learning and engagement.

Let's talk about Tryon Creek's fish!

Weā€™re bringing you a double-feature talk: weā€™ll be sharing about fish survey methods & findings, about the long-awaited Boones Ferry culvert project where the Arnold Creek tributary joins Tryon Creek. Join us as we explore some of these topicsā€¦

What did USFWS find during their fish surveys of Tryon Creek? What fish live in Tryon, and does Tryon Creek support migratory salmonids?

What challenges do urban creeks face in supporting fish populations? How healthy is Tryon Creek and how can we all help support fish?

What are fish passage barriers and how are they problematic? Whatā€™s happened at Boones Ferry this summer and how will it help the watershed?

Click here for details, and click here to RSVP. We will follow up with you to invite you to attend the presentation, which will be held via Zoom. Boost the event on Facebook, here!

This science talk is part of many happenings for World Fish Migration Day - check out their website for other events, documentaries, and a Eurofishion song contest!

We've been spearheading an ongoing collaboration across Watershed Councils, Soil and Water Conservation District, and other regional organizations, where weā€™re taking turns putting together videos and boosting them around social media. Check out our latest video on banana slugs!

You're invited: two local organizations, The Lake Oswego Sustainability Network (LOSN) and Respond to Racism (RtR) are co-hosting candidate forums, one for the City Council race and the other for the Mayor's race. These programs will give you the opportunity to know our candidates and to see how they answer questions about social, economic and environmental issues that we face in Lake Oswego. The forums will be moderated by local students, and we believe they will be fast-moving and exciting.

Mayoral Candidate Forum: October 9, 2020 - 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
The City Councilor Candidate Forum: October 14, 2020 - 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Boones Ferry Culvert Project Update

Learn more about the Boones Ferry Culvert Project at our Science Talk on 10/21!
From the City of Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services:  SW Boones Ferry Bridge & Restoration Project Update: October 8, 2020

Between October 8 and October 23, crews continue to build retaining walls for the bridge, build the trail enhancement area, coordinate relocation of utility lines, and install stormwater lines.

Due to COVID-19 and hazardous air quality delays during this construction process, the road closure on SW Boones Ferry Road will be extended to spring 2021. This extension will allow our contractor to continue construction on the bridge, culvert, and restoration efforts and conduct pavement restoration on SW Boones Ferry Road.

The new bridge will improve water flows by replacing an existing small culvert. This culvert cannot handle large flows of water during storms, and it blocks fish and wildlife. The SW Boones Ferry Bridge & Restoration Project will create and restore important connections for fish, wildlife, and people. It will connect trails and pedestrian facilities in the area, help reduce flooding risk, and restore important habitat.

"To view construction photos, visit our flickr album here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsmLfUL7v. The SW Boones Ferry Bridge & Restoration flickr album will be periodically updated with milestone pictures."
Read the full update from BES here.
