5 September 2020
Hi everyone!

We hope you are all well and that you have had a great month.

September has been eventful! We’re delighted to inform you that the Community Immunity campaign is still going strong. Webinar: The Impact of Savings and Credit Groups on Women
The first webinar we hosted this month focused on women and informal savings and credit groups. The growing involvement and influence of women in philanthropy in general has gone largely unrecognized. But particularly, the impact of women savings and credit (giving cycles) is under represented in giving statistics. Research done in Tanzania, Ghana and Zambia reveals that an ever-increasing number of women in rural and urban areas engage with savings and credit groups (village banks). The APN with support from AWDF wants to explore, what is the impact?

We called on to three experts to tell us a little more about the area. If you missed it the recording can be found below.

Webinar: Youth Empowerment- Defining Social Entrepreneurship in Tanzania

The second webinar of the month was a continuation of discussions conducted by APN in partnership with Diligent Consulting on exploring social entrepreneurship. The webinar featured young social entrepreneur speakers in Dar es Salaam and Dodoma regions, working in the sector of agriculture and health. The first is Colman, who is part of Kyaro Assistive, a that deals with the making of wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive instruments for people living with disabilities and those who might need them.

The second, Lilian Sambu, is the founder of LiLIANY Co. Lilian’s company is involved in agri-business, value addition to agricultural products, natural resource conservation, and health. The vision of LiLIAN Co. is to become one of the best businesses that provide quality services in their areas of focus, as well as helping young people become independent. The mission of the company is to use entrepreneurship as a tool to enable young people achieve their vision.

Women’s Writers Program
We are delighted to inform members that we have recently completed the writers’ program with our second cohort. For the second time round the program’s purpose was to offer young, enthusiastic writers with technical support to improve their writing. By the end of the 5-week program the group should feel equipped with necessary skills to come up and pitch interesting ideas for exploration in philanthropy, conduct research and present their work in an effective manner. This program is part of our long-term goal to create more opportunities for knowledge production within the country. We are looking forward to reading all the written pieced we’ll receive from them in the near future. You can read the already existing ones here
Guest Contribution
This month’s guest contribution to our newsletter is from The Other Foundation, a Southern African based foundation that works to advance equality and freedom, with a particular focus on sexuality and gender identity.  Their most recent black and white bulletin can be found here

The bulletin covers all the great work they are currently doing including research on a Conceptual Framework for the Involvement of Parents and Families in Advocacy for LGBTI Equality and Freedom in Southern Africa. Additionally, there is an update on their funding efforts as part of their COVI-19 response plan for LGBTI groups in the region. You can read more on their work here
