Several months ago I started to think that this crazy time we're living through was the universe's way of forcing us to hit a collective reset and ask:
  • What are our priorities?

  • How do we want to be spending our time?

  • Who do we want to be spending our time with?

  • Where do we want to be?

As France hit another 26k Covid cases yesterday alone, it's clear that things aren't going the direction we all expected. There are moments of normalcy in life, but also times when I do a double take and realize that things are not at all what they once were.

Tonight at a café — where we now have to sign in with our name and contact information for tracing purposes — I looked over and saw a table of four friends playing cards. It was such a simple act that in many ways seemed quite novel to observe in a Parisian café in 2020. I couldn't help but think I'd be fine seeing more of that and less scrolling on phones.

We're quite good at making life complicated, but I'm really warming up to the forced slowing down and simple joys of life right now. This spirit is at the heart of my new 3-month workshop that kicks off THIS FRIDAY (Oct 16th). Mapping Your Path into 2021 starts by asking:

We'll have 3-months of workshops, connection, and reflection to set you up for the New Year and everything that comes our way. It's a different type of goal setting, with a spirit of exploration and discovery. It's about finally carving out the time for ourselves to figure out what it is we really want, and putting the steps in place now to carry us forward, rather than waiting.
Spaces are limited and doors close Oct 16th at noon CET. Sign up NOW to grab your spot before they're gone!

And without further ado, here's this week's inspiration:

Listen.

Slim & The Beast is a Paris-based trio that I first encountered after posting a photo of one of my outdoor Writer's Hours sessions along the canal that I first connected with one of the band members. It was a good reminder of all the creative—and often unexpected—ways we can connect these days, and now you can regularly find their music on repeat on my Spotify. "Lisbon" and "Pasadena" are my two favorites, but really I love all their music—and album art.

Read.

I have to admit I haven't read The power of Ritual: turning everyday activities into soulful practices by Casper ter Kuile yet, but I thoroughly enjoy his interview with London Writer's Salon this week. Ter Kuile is a gay atheist, Harvard Divinity School Fellow, and co-host of the podcast "Harry Potter and the Sacred Text." His approach reframes the things we already love as sacred practice through intention, attention, and repetition.

Read.

The biggest topic of conversation in my life these days besides Covid and the US election is "Emily in Paris" (the new Netflix show I shared last week). The show has proven to be far quite controversial where people who fall in two camps: fans, or those who find it despicable. My reaction was similar to that of NYT corespondent Elaine Sciolino in her piece "France and Me: A Complicated Dance." I most definitely could agree with the sentiment, "to navigate Paris as an American is to be forced to slow down and embrace the process, ideally with a sense of humor.” Humor definitely has been my saving grace in France—and in life.
