Let the Celebrations Begin!

As we head towards the last quarter of the year and in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, it is time to celebrate some of the great achievements of the UN and what we accomplished together as civil society through partnerships to strengthen multilateralism. Despite this year being an unprecedented year for all, including the limiting impacts of the pandemic on UN diplomacy and civil society activism,  we nevertheless wanted UN75 to become more than just a birthday party. It is important that we acknowledge and celebrate the victories and wins in life no matter how big or small. The United Nations has accomplished so much!  So let the celebrations begin!

Starting with sharing our gratitude to the UN for the impact it has had in making the world a better place. Join us as we say Thank You UN in our E-book that already has over 325 entries filled with amazing stories and sentiments from all over the globe.

We have just added a new chapter to mark the 20th Anniversary of 1325, co-ordinated by the Global Network for Women Peacebuilders and GNWP and the Feminist and Women’s Movement Action Plan (FwMAP).

UNSCR 1325 marked the first time the Security Council addressed the disproportionate and unique impact of armed conflict on women and recognized their contribution to conflict resolution and prevention. Twenty years later, it remains a transformative instrument to put women at the core of global leadership and all efforts to prevent conflict and end the scourge of war.

Consider expressing your own highlight, memory or appreciation to the UN this week.

UN2020 supports the need for more engagement & inclusion of young people in the UN. “Youth today are very aware of the challenges the world faces, and motivated to make a difference, be it in addressing prejudices, socio-economic gaps, or climate change. Yet these driven young leaders also feel marginalized and ignored by the adults in power.”

We are very grateful for the support of 49 former Presidents, Prime Ministers, UN officials and Foreign Ministers who signed an open letter to world leaders on the occasion of the UN’s 75th anniversary commemorative events.

Signatories to the Eminent Person’s Open Letter include Mary Robinson, Former President of Ireland; Maria Fernanda Espinosa, President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly; Danilo Türk, former Prime Minister of Slovenia; and Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The signatories urged current heads of government to

(1) explicitly recognize the challenges facing the UN system in their remarks during the online General Assembly meeting September 21; and

(2) to call for a dedicated intergovernmental process to pursue improvements to the system in the follow-up to the UN75 Declaration.

The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the World Food Programme (WFP) with the Nobel committee stating, "The need for international solidarity and multilateral cooperation is more conspicuous than ever."

In making the announcement, the Nobel committee also said:

"The World Food Programme plays a key role in multilateral cooperation on making food security an instrument of peace, and has made a strong contribution towards mobilising UN Member States to combat the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict. The organisation contributes daily to advancing the fraternity of nations referred to in Alfred Nobel’s will. As the UN’s largest specialised agency, the World Food Programme is a modern version of the peace congresses that the Nobel Peace Prize is intended to promote."
