How About Looping the Ledge?

Peak fall colors are out and the view is gorgeous from the Ledge! With the warm weather, it's a great weekend to loop the Ledge.

Four loops are mapped based on engineering, education, and enforcement.  All loops have appropriate signage and markers along their route.

Each loop varies on difficulty and challenge depending on fitness levels from the casual rider to the in-training rider, there’s a level for everyone. It's a beautiful time of the year to check out the fall colors from the ledge. Happy biking!

FALL IS A  PERFECT TIME TO PLANT A TREE

Now is a great time to plant a tree in your yard. Fall rain and cooler temperatures allow trees to establish roots for an extra season before the extreme heat and/or drought of the summer.  As long as the ground isn’t frozen, fall is a great time to plant a tree.  However, the time of year that you plant a tree doesn’t matter if you don’t plant it correctly. Make sure you are choosing the right tree for your chosen location: consider height, soil, sun, shade, and moisture. Look up and make sure you aren’t planting too close to overhead utility lines.  Call Digger’s Hotline (811) to make sure you aren’t anywhere near underground utilities.
Even in fall, your tree will require watering. Always mulch a ring around your tree.  Typically, 2-3” of mulch is sufficient.  Mulch wide, not high.  Do not mulch up against your tree trunk.  (Create a mulch donut, not a mulch volcano.) Mulching can improve soil structure and mimics the natural environment found in forests where the leaves and branches cover the soil surface. The mulch decomposes and adds nutrients as they decompose. It also helps protect the tree from your mower and string trimmer. Ideally, mulch as much of the area as possible, extending to the outer edge of the tree canopy.  As the tree grows, so should your mulch ring. Check out arborday.org for additional helpful information on planting and mulching trees.
