Ever wonder what your students are thinking? We do too. This returning, two part series will explore the student perspective. Our first of this two part series will look at an Audiology student out on externship during COVID-19.
What did you learn about working with clients that was surprising and positive?
It was surprising and positive how quickly some clients will seem like friends – from the lady dancing while we cleaned her hearing aids to the gentleman showing us the IMDB page of his 3-year old granddaughter. For me, this was one of the best parts of placement.
What would you like to say to the clinicians considering taking a student under these conditions?
I would say it’s the perfect time to take on a student! They’re a great support - helping you clean between clients or reminding you to put on all of your PPE. If you’re missing social interaction - chat and get to know your student. If you’re bored – a student is a great challenge!
What advice would you give new students entering placements for the first time?
Be open-minded and to give things time. It’s uncomfortable at first when it’s unfamiliar and you’re unsure of yourself. My experience was always much more positive in the last week than in the first week.
Use your CE. They are your greatest resource – ask questions, make mistakes, tell them what you need to further your learning. You do not need to be perfect and they will be impressed by your enthusiasm.
