Advocacy

SURVEY ON PTSA LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES CLOSES TONIGHT!
Each year in October the Washington State PTA holds a Legislative Assembly to decide its legislative platform and update its resolutions. The Roosevelt PTSA has a vote and your voice matters — please take a few minutes and complete this e-survey. Issues range from special education, emergency preparedness, to social emotional learning, to gun control, to racism. The WSPTA Voters’ Guide has all the details to help you understand the survey questions. Don’t delay, the survey closes tonight!

RHS PTSA Endorses Referendum 90!
The RHS PTSA has voted to endorse Referendum 90, which will be on the ballot this November. R-90 is a referendum on the comprehensive sexual education bill passed by the state legislature in the last session (SB 5395). SB 5395 requires that all school districts provide comprehensive, medically accurate, age-appropriate sex education to K-12 students, including education on affirmative consent and bystander training. Before this bill was passed, this was optional. The specific curriculum would be chosen by each district as long as it aligns with the standards set out by the state. The legislation also requires districts to allow families to opt their children out of these classes if they want. Ballotpedia has a good explanation of the Referendum. The Washington State PTA has also endorsed R-90. Please join us in voting YES on R-90 and supporting comprehensive, medically accurate sex education for all of our students!

Are You Registered to Vote?
You can check your registration status, update your address, or register here. Online or mailed registrations must be received by October 26. Ballots will be mailed October 14.

October is Filipino American History Month
Did you know that Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American group in the nation? The celebration of Filipino American History Month in October commemorates the first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States, which occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California. You can find more information about Filipino American history at the Filipino American National Historical Society, headquartered right here in Seattle.

Then, complete an interest form so you can be matched with a virtual classroom!

Harvest Food for the Food Bank Farm
The Food Bank Farm needs 2,500 human volunteer hours to get 500,000 pounds of food from the field to the tables of hungry people. The demand at food banks this year is double from last year.
