Oct. 19th: From Tahrir to "The Solar Grid" by Artist and Middle East Comics Scholar Ganzeer (Virtual Event) | Ohio State University Libraries
The Ohio State University Libraries invites you to: From Tahrir to “The Solar Grid”, a unique zoom webinar by Ganzeer, an Egyptian political cartoonist. 

This event is part of a series on Global Comics, sponsored by The Ohio State University’s Center for Latin American Studies, Center for Slavic and East European Studies, and East Asian Studies Center, with funds from the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant, the Area Studies Department, University Libraries, the Middle East Studies Center, the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Cultures, and the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum.   

The event will take place virtually on October 19, 2020 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Eastern time. (US)
 This event is free but requires registration.

The platform will be Zoom, which may require installation in advance of the event.

November 13th: Turkish Hip Hop group, Tahribad-ı İsyan Performance and presentation
“Audiences and Online Reception: Before and After COVID” will host the Turkish Hip Hop group, Tahribad-ı İsyan, for a performance and presentation on Friday, November 13th from 9:30 AM-11:30 AM (ET) via Zoom. Tahribad-ı İsyan will discuss how the company formed, the social messages central to their music, and their current work with refugees in Turkey. The presentation will be delivered in Turkish with English translation by urban rights activist Funda Oral. Following the presentation, Tahribad-ı İsyan will perform several of their hit songs and share in a question-and-answer session moderated by Dr. Danielle Schoon, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. This free event is open to the public. Registration required.

November 18th: Reckoning with Minority Community Rights in Turkey, and the Parallels to Black Lives Matter | Middle East Studies Center
The Middle East Studies Center brings you a panel of experts to provide an understanding of the diversity of religion in the Middle East region and a look at the Alevi community in Turkey, a sect related to Shi’i (Shi’ite) Islam and mystical traditions. The Sunni-Shi’i divide is only the proverbial tip of the iceberg of regional religious diversity and the complex social, economic, and political differences which were brought to light by the Gezi protests of 2013. The event will take place on Zoom Register for event and you will receive the link and password.
