Regional Update

for the play, active recreation and sport sector
14 October 2020
Kia ora,

The past fortnight has been a busy time for Sport Wellington with the Sport NZ Women + Girls Summit and other activities gearing up out in the community. Our team is looking forward to some balance over the coming weeks before the lead up to our AGM and the full launch of Brendan Foot Supersite Round the Bays in November.

Thank you for joining us at Day One of the Sport NZ Women + Girls Summit - online content still available!

Sport Wellington would like to thank everyone who joined us last Wednesday for Day One of the Sport NZ Women + Girls Summit 2020. It was great to see over 80 attendees in the room kicking off the event with a focus on Leadership.

View a wrap up of the Summit, including the full recordings for each of the three days on our website

"Change in Action" was the theme of this year's Summit, which is one of many events scheduled in the lead up to the 8th International Working Group (IWG) Conference in Auckland in May 2022. The IWG is the world’s largest network dedicated to advancing sport by empowering women and girls. Find out more

Tū Manawa Active Aotearoa updates

The first rounds of Sport Wellington’s Open Fund and Fast Fund closed in September with funding requests exceeding the funds available to be distributed. We are very pleased to see a wide range of organisations applying across Councils, Regional Sport Organisations, Clubs, Schools, Health Organisations and Community Groups. Due to the high demand, we are experiencing delays in assessing the applications and will be in touch with all applicants later this week with more information.

The Fast Fund is a rolling fund that organisations can apply for up to $10,000 all year round and is assessed on a monthly basis. We will have a further two rounds for larger Open Fund applications. Full details regarding funding rounds, community guidelines and more resources can be found on our website

Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa is targeted towards tamariki and rangatahi aged 5-18 years and young women aged 19 -24 years, with a particular focus on young people who are wanting to participate in play, active recreation and sport, but face barriers to their participation. Funding requests are assessed on a project’s ability to address the specific barriers identified for local young people who are missing out.

We strongly recommend that all applicants come in and meet with us prior to submitting an application to ensure you have the best possible chance of succeeding. Please contact Jamie Leith, Partnerships Advisor, on tumanawa@sportwellington.org.nz to arrange a time to meet.

Further support, such as workshops and webinars, will also be available to organisations planning on applying. We will share more information about these opportunities through this newsletter, on our website, and through social media as these become available.

We update our Funding section on our website regularly to provide an overview of the funding that we're aware is currently available for our sector in the greater Wellington region. If you have information that you would like to have listed, please email us.

Get ready for November's Get Outdoors Week

Recreation Aotearoa is gearing up for Get Outdoors Week 14-22 November 2020. This is a great time to share opportunities and get involved with events around the region. Check out the events that are loaded up already on the campaign's website.

How are you going to get involved and spread the word?

HuiE! community survey results for 2020

Hui E! is a peak body for the Tangata Whenua, community and voluntary sector in Aotearoa New Zealand. Throughout May-June of 2020, they distributed a survey to find out about the impacts of COVID‐19 on the sector. The findings share experiences of fellow organisations and insights into the sector. A theme woven throughout the results is that it's now time to shine, time to take stock, and time to shape our future.

Keeping Young People with Physical Impairments involved in sport

New research will look at inclusion and the positive factors that contribute to the successful engagement of Young People with Physical Impairments (YPwI) who do participate in clubs and teams. Little has been done in this area within the physical activity sector previously, so from this study, it is hoped the number of YPwI engaged in sport and active recreation in the future will increase.

The scope of this research requires qualitative accounts from five YPwI, aged between 10-14 years who participate in sport or active recreation. Due to the low number of participants they have put together a nomination questionnaire to ensure they include a diverse group in the participant pool. There is also a focus on the whānau environment.

Do you know a YPwI who may like to contribute to this research? Do you have networks in the sector which you can share this opportunity with? Please direct them to www.weareintheteam.com.

Create compelling affirmations to coach self-efficacy and positivity

We understand the importance of praise and feedback to build self-efficacy, but how do we elevate this to endorse the feeling of self-leadership in another person?

This article teaches us about compelling affirmations and how adding value and quality into the praise makes it genuine and more accessible for a person to take on board and be proud of. Read the article and take note of some of the tactics: A Short Guide on Affirmations in Life and Leadership

The latest from Balance is Better

Are we expecting young people to all develop at the same rate?
  • Dane Lett, Black Sticks hockey player and Head of Hockey at Wellington Hockey, believes we are doing our youth and our future sporting potential a disservice by focusing on selection at an early age. Read the full article to understand how early selection and specialisation in one sport can cause a very high turnover from youth level to senior level; and what changes Hockey NZ are currently making to focus on development over outcomes.
Building mental strength
  • Join Player Development Project Editor, Dave Wright as he engages in an informative discussion on mental performance and sports psychology with John Haime, former professional golfer and President of New Edge Performance in Canada. • The importance of self-awareness
    • Psychological tips for performance
    • Building character & resilience
    • The importance of happiness

Sport NZ updates

Futures Survey

The survey involves five simple questions which will be incorporated into Sport NZ's Futures Project. This survey is currently live and is open until Friday 24 October.
Futures Progress Reports
  • These interim reports aim to help prepare us to plan for and adapt to, a range of future scenarios that may come to pass, ensuring the sector is fit for purpose to deliver play, active recreation and sporting opportunities to all those living in New Zealand. View the two reports and find out more about the environmental scans on the Sport NZ website
Diversity and Inclusion Survey
  • Over the past fortnight, you may have received an email from Sport NZ to complete their Diversity and Inclusion Survey. Make sure to submit your response as this will help to mould the future of the sector. The survey closes this week.

  • A new programme for coaches working with secondary school age athletes is opening for applications next week until Monday 30 November. The programme is limited to 60 community coaches and will align with the Balance is Better philosophy.
