Helping youth transition from Institutional Care to Independence
AFEC
Meet AFEC Achiever Jumman, 19
Jumman, with his bright smile, is ready to face down all obstacles to achieving a bright future! He lost his parents when he was three and grew up in an orphanage in Mumbai.

At the age of 18, when he had to leave the orphanage, he was able to get housing in a government home. AFEC supported him for a six-month graphic design course, and he landed a trainee job earning Rs 5000/month.

Unfortunately, COVID temporarily halted his job, but with AFEC’s help Jumman has put his downtime to good use by learning English using a smartphone app, which will give him a leg-up in his career!
Update
Dear AFEC Supporter,

Indian institutions are starting to open up slowly after months of being closed due to COVID-19, The last few months have been very difficult for our AFEC Achievers. The ones who were employed lost their jobs and almost all educational institutions shut down. Thanks to supporters like you, we were able to provide Achievers with smartphones and a subscription to Enguru, a spoken English app. Twenty-six Achievers who didn’t have smartphones were given one, and an initial batch of 50 Achievers were enrolled in Enguru. They are enjoying a friendly competition to see who can make the most progress each week!

We are also excited to be working with a stellar second partner Udayan Care. Like our original partner CSA, which has over 20 years of experience working with 90+ orphanages in India, Udayan Care has been working with disadvantaged children over the last 25 years. Udayan Care runs 17 homes for orphans across four states, and supports the alumni from their homes, regardless of age, until they can be self-sufficient.

Udayan Care and AFEC are collaborating on a pilot project to help youth aging out of orphanages that provide no support after 18. With multiple partners, we can test our model as well as address scaling.

We have over 120 new AFEC Achievers signed up, just waiting for educational institutions to open up again. We are looking forward to getting back to work!

Warmly,

Gita

Did you know?

Did you know there is an Indian Jewish population of around 5000, mostly from Mumbai, which is the birthplace of Samson Koletkar?

Another interesting tidbit. During World War II, several hundred Polish Jewish children and women managed to escape the ravages of war, but were refused entry in many countries. When their ship docked in Mumbai, the British governor also refused entry.

However, Maharaja Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar, (affectionately known as “Jam Sahib” ) invited the children into his province, sheltered them and even adopted them overcoming British objections to foreign refugees. Thus began Little Poland in India!
