New COVID alert levels introduced
As we all continue to navigate the changes in our lives as a result of COVID-19, a new Local COVID Alert system has been introduced to set out information for residents about what to do and how to manage the outbreaks in their area.

There are now three Local COVID Alert Level tiers: medium, high and very high, which each set out the measures and restrictions that people need to abide by:

Tier 1:
Follow the rule of six if meeting indoors or outdoors
Pubs and restaurants to shut at 10pm

Tier 2:
No household mixing indoors
Rule of six will apply outdoors

Tier 3:
No household mixing indoors or outdoors
Pubs and bars not serving meals will be closed
Guidance against travelling in and out of the area
Rule of six applies to outdoor places like parks and beaches

Hertfordshire is currently in Tier 1, though neighbouring Essex will be moving from Tier 1 to Tier 2 from midnight tonight, so please be aware of this if visiting the county.

Smoking? It's time to Stop

Have you considered putting a stop to your smoking?

October heralds the annual Stoptober campaign to encourage people to quit smoking, so if you have thought about giving up the harmful tobacco, there is no better time than the present.

Have you thought about how you can do this effectively, and whether you need any support to do so?

This year's campaign is part of the NHS 'Better Health' initiative, which aims to encourage people to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Don’t forget you can speak to your GP or, for more information about quitting, visit www.nhs.uk/better-health/quit-smoking

Help raise awareness of slavery

Slavery can cause mental and physical suffering for victims, with people we may come into contact with bearing those scars, including injuries to the body from abuse and associated psychological trauma.

This Sunday, 18 October, the issue of modern slavery will be in the spotlight when Anti-Slavery Day takes place, which raises awareness of human trafficking and aims to encourage government, local authorities, companies, charities and individuals to do what they can to address the problem.

A COVID safe Halloween!
With the traditional Halloween celebrations just two weeks away, it's important to remember to keep COVID safe when enjoying the festivities.

This year, many traditions, such as trick or treating carry a risk and are not encouraged. Alternatives to trick or treating include taking part in a local ‘spot the pumpkin’ trail throughout half term week or carving or decorating pumpkins.

Why not carve a rainbow in your pumpkin? Here’s a handy ‘how to’ video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rm4ri9_PxE&feature=youtu.be

Would you like to learn more about cancer?
Are you a member of a special interest group or other organisation whose members would be interested to learn more about the causes of cancer and the screening programmes available?

The volunteers from the Cancel Out Cancer group are starting to hold online sessions and are keen to hear from those who would like to find out more.

The aim of these sessions is to provide information and signposting for people about cancer and the factors that can increase their chances of getting cancer.

They are free, and are open to anyone to attend; they are especially appropriate for those who are worried about cancer and want to know what they can do to reduce their chances of getting the disease.

If you are part of a group or network which would benefit from a session, or just want to learn more about the campaign, please email enhertsccg.engagement@nhs.net
