ASI Accredited Auditors Update

October 2020

Dear ASI Accredited Auditors,

Welcome to ASI's monthly update email for Accredited Auditors. Today we will update you on:
  • Update on the Standards revision process
  • Data collation and validation of GHG emissions from ASI Members
  • Calculating the Input Percentage with both recycled and non-recycled material
  • What do you think of ASI's training modules?
Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like us to address other topics in future updates.

Update on the Standards revision process

The Standards Committee is currently finalising discussions and deliberations on recommendations put forward by the Working Groups.

As each week flies by, the ASI Standards Committee (SC) and Working Groups (WGs) continue to work diligently on the Standards Revision process. The SC has recently commenced final discussions and deliberations on the recommendations put forward by the WGs with respect to the revision of both the Performance Standard and Chain of Custody Standard, their respective Guidance documents, Claims Guide and Assurance Manual. The Standards Committee is in the middle of an intensive two-week work session to approve these revisions for the commencement of the consultation period in early 2021.

As some critical topics of the Standards, such as Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions or Pre-Consumer Scrap, are still being debated, the SC has decided to allot additional time to finalise the Criteria and their guidance before they are published for consultation. The new schedule plans to put the documents out for consultation on 26 February 2020.

Data collation and validation of GHG emissions from ASI Members

ASI has commissioned an external review of published Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and energy use data from certified ASI Entities, which was conducted by Atmolite Consulting Pty Ltd and finalised in September. The review covered 51 ASI Entities, from 34 ASI Members. Of these, 15 Entities were engaged in Aluminium Smelting.

The findings represent a snapshot of GHG data disclosures as of July 2020, with granularity at the regional, country and supply chain activity level. They show a high level of data challenges and issues. 12 Entities have a poor data completeness, no data were found at all for 5 of them, and there is limited reporting on energy data. The data are often aggregated across a parent or corporate organisation, and are not available for specific ASI Entities. The data sources, formats and units are very different from one Entity to the other, creating barriers to transparency and accessibility. On top of that, data collected from different sources are conflicting.

Despite the concerns raised on data quality from Audit Reports, this review also highlights a recent uptake of energy, emissions and general sustainability disclosures by new ASI Members, many of which did not have the practice of such disclosures prior to ASI Certification. This shows ASI’s impact in encouraging positive change by its Members, through the ASI Certification process. It is hoped that ongoing transparency and the tracking of the energy and emissions profile of ASI Member organisations will help drive significant changes in the overall carbon footprint of global aluminium production.

Calculating the Input Percentage with both recycled and non-recycled content

We have recently received several questions relating to the calculation of the Input Percentage when the Re-Melter/Refiner has both recycled and non-recycled material inputs.

The formulas of Criteria 8.4 and 8.5 of the Chain of Custody Standard, respectively accounting for CoC Material input and Eligible Scrap input, can be combined into one single formula that accounts for both CoC Material and Eligible Scrap:

(Input Quantity of CoC Material + Input Quantity of Eligible Scrap) x 100
(Input Quantity of CoC Material) + (Input Quantity of Recyclable Scrap Material) + (Input Quantity of Non-CoC Material)

What do you think of ASI's training modules?

If you have gone through all or some of the online modules, we would love to hear from you!

We are currently conducting an analysis of the effectiveness of our educationAl training program so as to better understand our users' overall experience, which topics are most useful, if the format is engaging, and so on. As learning is a continuous journey, there will be more training modules to develop in the future and we would love to have your input on the current set of modules to inform our plans for future training program development and design of our learning materials.

We kindly ask you to take 5 minutes to give your valuable input to our educationAl feedback survey. A big thank you in advance for your feedback. Your input will help us to continuously improve ASI's training interventions!
